IDW - Regeneration One #89

Title: Natural Selection Part Four
Writer: Simon Furman
Penciler: Andrew Wildman
Inker: Stephen Baskerville
Colorist: John-Paul Bove
Letterer: Chris Mowry
Editor: John Barber
Editor-in-Chief: Chris Ryall
Plot
The Dinobots are hiding from the now evil Autobots and the Decepticons and decide that they need to take down Grimlock for betraying them, and Scorponok for doing all this, so they head somewhee they know Grimlock will go to.
Soon, Treadshot detects someone entering the Nursery and Grimlock overhears, he kills the Decepticon and heads out himself, as he wants to help Slag, who's there, and must assume that the Dinobots are the intruders.
At the Sonic Canyons, Scorponok is surveying the construction of the pan global gene key, but starts to lose his cool, possibly as a result of his reattachment to a body.
In the lower levels of Cybertron Hot Rod is standing before the two artifacts, the sword and covenant of primus, he assumes he needs to choose one.
On Earth Optimus is driving around, and tries helping the humans in secret by helping repair the damages caused by Megatron, but he knows they won't accept him in the long run, at the Ark, Galvatron learns through Shockwave's memories that he seemed to hook himself up the the ark's computers so that he could survive due to his bad injuries after the crash.

Back on Cybertron Grimlock reaches the Nursery where he checks on Slag, but gets ambushed by the other Dinobots who want to kill him for all he's done, meanwhile Brainstorm, Hardhead and some Decepticons find Treadshot's body and report to Scorponok, who reveals that he has a tracer on Grimlock's body, and tells them where he is.
Hot Rod grabs for the Covenant and is shown how in the distant past the Demons were Cybertron's inhabitants and worshipped Primus, however after they started to war with eachother, Primus culled the planet, however leaving some alive in the aftermath, which Hot Rod now understands is his job to now finish off, so he grabs the sword and goes to attack a Demon who has just come through the phased wall as well.

Girmlock fights back against his friends, but before long Brainstorm and the others arrive and say they're going to kill all the Dinobots, in responce Grimlock blasts open Inferno's cell, releasing him and causes him to unleash his internal combustion effects, filling the place with fire, and taking out the bad guys.
Hosehead and the other uninfected Autobots arrive outside and put out the fire, and join forces with the escaped Dinobots, Grimlock reveals his plan is to turn the gene key against Scorponok and reverse the effects.
Ultra Magnus' ship, the Valiant, arrives in Cybertron space after the battle on Earth, unaware of the chaos below, and are granted access by the Decepticon clones, who have been ordered to blow the ship out of the sky when it gets close enough!

Notes
  • It's unclear who the white car on page one is, but I'm going to assume here it's Tailgate...just because!
  • Also, why is Slapdash driving around alive? The Headmasters killed him a few issues ago! (It could be Road King I guess though, so that's what I'll call him here!)
  • So I guess the giant sized gene key NEEDS to look like a key still huh?
  • Oh lookit! Erector!! Most things are now forgiven!!
  • Hot Rod's choice between the Sword of Primus, and the Covenant of Primus is a pretty clear parallel to Captain Britain's choice when he'she gains their powers. Though unlike them, Hot Rod seems to choose both!
  • Inferno's Nucleon infused abilities are quite ironic, since he's a fire fighter, and now he expels fire!
  • Why do the Decepticon clones look different? Shouldn't they be, you know, identical from the head-on?
  • Why is it that Scorponok never used the Gene Key on Grimlock? And why doesn't he just get the other Dinobots infected either? He just orders for them to be killed on sight. Maybe the key can't be used on "primitives"?
  • Seriously, what is it with Decepticons and shooting Autobots out of orbit? Megatron did that to the Wreckers above Earth, and now Scorponok plans for the Clones to do it to the Valiant as well!!

IDW - More Than Meets the Eye #14

Title: Remembrance Day
Written by: James Roberts
Art by: Alex Milne
Colour by: Josh Burcham
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editor: John Barber
Plot
4.2 Million years ago on Luna 2, two Miners find a powerful green spark and report it in, when a Functionist comes to investigate he confirms it and grants the foreman who reported it, Momus, as alt mode exempt, however he tells the two miners that due to them being explosed to the first flash of the spark they'll die within 6 hours.
Much Later, on the Lost Light Chromedome has entered Overlord's mind to try and find out what makes  Phase Sixer exist, he talks with Overlord and makes him relive the final battle at Garrus-9. He then flashes him back to Overlord's time in the pits, and watches him battle Megatron before the war, and estimates that Overlord is about 4.2 million years old (it was his spark found above). Next Chromedome takes him forward a bit to after the start of the war and watches as Megatron beats him half to death, and has him taken to a lab.
In the lab, Overlord has been stripped to his endoskeleton and placed in a tank, where Megatron has Rossum embalm him in Ununtrium, to make him almost invinsible, Megatron assists Rossum in the process and it's successful, as his first act after his rebirth however Overlord grabs Rossum's head, and crushes it.
Chromedome has the information he needs now on how to make a Phase Sixer and prepares to leave, however Overlord tricks him into having a shared memory of when he attacked the New Institute, where Chromedome (Tumbler) then worked and shows him kidnapping Trepan, afterwards Chromedome remembers how Pharma came to fix him, when he suddenly realizes that Chromedome couldn't have seen this as he was gone.
Overlord reveals that he learned Mnemosurgery from Trepan as he planned to use it on Shockwave to find a way to remove his killswitch, but Megatron has Trepan killed before he could teach him much. Overlord reveals he could have done this, and broken free from his cell at any time, but lacked the motivation, until Chromedome let it slip that Megatron was still alive somewhere, giving him frive again.
Overlord explores Chromedome's mind for any mention of his own name, and sees Chromedome meeting with Prowl before Optimus returned after the Chaos event and watches as Prowl reveals Overlord is still alive, and that he wants Chromedome to use his skills on him to learn how to make Phase Sixers for the Autobots to use as well, Chromedome refuses, but Prowl threatens to reveal all of Chromedome's dark secrets to Rewind if he refuses. Chromedome snaps and attacks Prowl, removing this conversation and those memories from him, but imperfectly.
Sometime later, Chromedome is taken to Brainstorm's lab where he's working on the new holoavatars used on Hedonia, Drift reveals that Prowl had the Duobots and him bring Overlord onboard and were to get Chromedome to enter his mind when he was at his lowest (when Rewind was injured). The slow cell is explained to him, and reveals that it's used mostly so that even if Overlord managed to escape then the crew could mobilize to take him down if needed. Chromedome is given the code for the cell, which of course Overlord also sees.
Overlord breaks free of the cell and breaks the connection suddenly too, leaving Chromedome briefly disabled. Overlord leaves the cell and turns on the cell's systems, meaning that although it'll take Chromedome about 5 seconds to cross the cell and escape, Overlord would have been on the ship to do anything he wants for much more than that.

Notes
  • Chromedome was taught Mnemosurgery by Trepan, who was last seen in Shadowplay
  • Transformer sparks seem to just randomly appear on Cybertron or it's moons and are "born" that way
  • Phase Sixers are revealed to be individuals who have a rare and powerful spark type, which is enhanced by a rare compound called Ununtrium. Also the phase sixers were originally called the "Warriors Elite"
  • There's a fourth phase sixer called Heretech somewhere (maybe Tarn's real name?)
  • Rossum, who devised the rule of thirds is shown here to have joined the Decepticons.
  • Brainstorm is shown to have been an operator with Chromedome in the "New Institute" maybe meaning the gun he found with Skids was designed by someone he knew?
  • It's revealed here that the White Out Vacuum mentioned as the location of Overlord's spark in the cover story doesn't actually exist.
  • Prowl's damaged mind as mentioned by Bombshell in RID is explained here as Chromedome attacking him with his needles
  • From the names Brainstorm gives the Overlord-based projects, I can assume he knows it'll fail (ie "Total Insanity", "Asking for Trouble" and "End in Tears"
  • Overlord's slow cell is set so every 5 seconds for the person inside it (when it's active) is 30 minutes for the outside world, which explains why Red Alert's recording of his voice was so slow.
  • It's implied here that Drift was the one who removed Red's data slug from Rung's hand, however it's not clear if he was also the one who decapitated the poor guy too.
  • Drift being alerted to Rewing talking about Overload (rather than Overlord) is a common mistake in this franchise of ours. This is also confirmation of the Micromaster (if he is one here) as a character in this universe!
  • The older a Transformer is, the worst his memory for details gets, as shown here with the pit crowd being badly coloured and detailed
  • Megatron had Shockwave implant kill switches into the Phase Sixers, just in case they go wrong, This was shown with Sixshot in Devastation, and Overlord has Shockwave remove his "Achilles heal" in Last Stand of the Wreckers, which was likely this very switch.

Plot
Bumblebee, Hot Spot and Groove are out looking for the Decepticons still hiding on Earth some where, but are getting nowhere, when they return to Omega Supreme Prowl isn't impressed, and orders Groove to join him on a mission to help him and Streetwise spy on Spike, ignoring Bumblebee's commands.
Bumblebee goes to talk to Thundercracker, who has no intentions of helping him, however during their discussions about a previous time they met, during the search for Metroplex they both realize that Megatron has somehow managed to copy Metroplex's space bridge technologies, and plans to use it to summon the Earth Decepticons to attack the Autobots. Thundercracker still wont help him stop the Decepticons from using this to overwhelm the Autobots, but he will give Bumblebee the data he collected on Metroplex in the past, so he can search for similar energy signatures.
Bumblebee visits his friend Sanjay Bharmaney and manages to locate the signature somewhere in America, Bumblebee heads out alone and finds the Decepticon army ready to receive Megatron's signal, Bumblebee goes to sabotage the Space Bridge but it activates and shows the Decepticons where he is. They get ready to tear him apart, but Starscream orders everyone but the Stunticons to enter the Bridge.
The Stunticons proceed to pummel Bumblebee (yay!) but Bumblebee jabs his cane into the Space Bridge's systems, making it overload and knocking out the Stunticons. Bumblebee later returns to Omega Supreme with the Stunticons in a net and starts taking charge properly and starts giving orders. Prowl's happy that Bumblebee has started acting like a real leader at long last.

Notes

  • This story is set during the first part of Police Action, and during the Chaos event, showing what Bumblebee was doing during the storyline, which wasn't really shown in the earlier comics, and shows how the Decepticons got from Earth to Cybertron
  • This story confirms that Megatron's (then) new body used some of Metroplex's design features to giving him Space Bridge generating properties
  • Bumblebee gets the inspiration for his future electrical discharge cane here when he uses his can to overload the Space Bridge
  • Dr Bharwaney from the Bumblebee Miniseries is renamed/misnamed here as Dr Bharmaney, and seems to have kept Bumblebee as his ally
  • Starscream seems to have his Robots in Disguise body rather than his Earth body
  • Due to the art style and coloring here I can't tell who all the background Decepticons are, so I won't even try

Plot
Circuit continues his interview with Metalhawk outside the ruined bar as the riots have stopped, when they both hear about the Decepticon breakout at the jail. Metalhawk contacts Bumblebee, who is joined by Blurr, Swindle and Dirge who reveal that Prowl is behind everything. Broadside can't get ahold of Prowl on his communicator, and his quarters aren't on the grid, so everyone starts to get worried, and decide to go look for him.
At the Black Room, Arcee has arrived, and Wheeljack and Starscream are Prowl's prisoners, both confused, Turmoil and Skywarp are sent out to set up the Decepticons in the city, whilst Megatron has Bombshell whip him up a new body, as his current one is too badly damaged.
Bumblebee, Blurr, Swindle, Sideswipe, Dirge and Metalhawk are out looking for Prowl for answers when the supposedly dead Astrotrain, Blitzwing and the Cassettes attack the group, taking down Swindle and Blurr, and badly injuring Metalhawk, everyone else (including Metalhawk) are lured into the Black Room where they find Prowl with the Decepticons, holding Screamer and Wheeljack prisoner.
Wheeljack starts talking to keep Bumblebee calm, but Prowl coldly executes him, blowing his head off tothe shock of everyone, especially with all the supposedly dead Decepticons being present too. Megatron reenters the room, in his new body, carrying his old one in his arms, and explains that he used the Ore-13 in his old body to create the strange effect on Cybertron, creating the wilderness. Then the Decepticons explain how Megatron gained the insight on how to create a perfect combiner whilst fighting the Deceptigod during the Chaos event, and that he was the one who captured, experimented on and combined the Aerialbots, and explains that he left them to kill the Dinobots and Ironhide, as well as themselves in the wilderness.
Bombshell explains that the reason the gestalt process always failed was because of the component's individuality, and so he came up with a plan to remove that. However their plans were a bit halted when the Titan arrived and announced Screamer was the chosen one, which could have harmed Megatron's ultimate plans, so Prowl took down Omega Supreme to allow the Decepticons to be blamed and halt Starscream's own plans.
It's revealed by Bombshell, that he's been controlling Prowl since they fought in the sewers and had the Constructicon's "killed" to take them out of sight so they can be worked on for the big plan.

Bombshell briefly frees Prowl's mind, so he can "say goodbye", Prowl asks how Bumblebee couldn't have known he wasn't in control of his mind, just as Megatron orders the Constructicons AND PROWL to combine into Devastator, with Prowl forming the head.
Devastator starts his attack on the city, smashing into Autobot HQ, seemingly killing Sky High and Broadside, as the Decepticons begin their ground assault. Soundwave reports that the highest number of Autobots is at the Med-Center, so Megatron orders Devastator to start there. Bumblebee starts to question why Megatron has told him everything if he's just going to kill him, in response Megatron crushed his head and orders his troops to kill the rest, with Arcee stabbing Sideswipe with her sword. Megatron turns on a projector which pits the Decepticon insignia on the moon as Devastator smashes through the city.

Just outside the city Ironhide, Swoop, Slag, Sludge, Snarl and Superion show up and watch the carnage, with Ironhide guessing they need to save the world.

Notes
  • It seems that Prowl's been under Bombshell's control since they met in the sewers...Time to re-read the series!
  • Arcee's role in this whole thing seems a bit more confusing though, as she was on Prowl's side BEFORE he was altered
  • Megatron's new body seems to be based on his pre-Earth mode (though is different still)
  • It's a bit ironic that just as Hasbro announce a toy based on his stealth bomber body, that he's be given a completely new charactrer model....
  • As I'm sure is noted everywhere else, Broadside is shown talking to Fixit, however the guy who is on screen is Circuit, this is either an art mistake, script error, or Fixit's voice is coming from another unseen panel, and Broadside is just watching the news at the same point
  • I do hope Bumblebee's face being smashed in isn't a lead up to him being mute like in most other continuities...lets just hope he stays dead please!
  • It's mentioned here that Prowl's mind already had damaged memories...possibly hinting that Chromedome did things to him in the past?
  • Remember, as seen a lot in MTMTE, and even with the Constructicons in this series, headshots aren't always fatal...don't count Jackie out yet!

IDW - Rage of the Dinobots #4

Written by: Mike Johnson & Mairghread Scott
Art by: Agustin Padilla
Colors by: Thomas Deer
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editor: John Barber
Plot
Shockwave is engaged in battle with the Dinobots and Ultra Magnus, after a short battle however, Shockwave releases an EMP and knocks out the Autobots.
Later, Grimlock wakes up in Shockwave's lab, strapped to a table, with Shockwave planning to remove Grimlock's sentience to make him more obedient. Elsewhere, the other Dinobots and Magnus are in a jail and try to figure out how to escape, Magnus picks a fight with Slug and the Decepticon jailers lower the forcefield  to break it up, however the Autobots attack, with them revealing that the fight was just a trick to see if they were stupid enough to let them out this way.
Shockwave gets on with his work on Grimlock, however he'd soon attacked by the others and all tear apart and kill Shockwave, Grimlock is freed from his restraints.
All of a sudden Shockwave appears via a hologram and reveals that the body they just destroyed was just one of many duplicates he has set up, just in case of being killed.
Soon, the Autobots have all left the lab and have a ship set up to leave, Magnus boards it intending to join Optimus and the others, but the Dinobots decide to remain behind to help deal with the remaining Decepticons and to take care of any Autobots still on the planet too. Magnus bids them farewell as the Dinobots head off through the mostly deserted planet as Magnus' ship blasts off.

To be Continued in Beast Hunters

Notes
  • So...what happened to Backbite after issue one?
  • Also, where did the other Autobot prisoners who escaped disappear to?
  • I also guess Ser-Ket is dead then...though I can't see how her injury was fatal...
  • Grimlock is shown here to have a regular face under his visor and mouthplate one, and his "mask" seems to help him to think in some way, possibly implying that without it he's die or something
  • Shockwave is shown to use duplicates of himself to keep himself safe...this could give an explanation to his apparent return in Prime season 3 despite being seemingly killed by Arcee and Cliffjumper in the Space Bridge accident
  • The other Dinobots were mere tests before Grimlock was completed
  • Sludge's Dinobot body isn't explained here, despite it being a bit of a big plot hole, since he was meant to be dead....
  • The flashbacks shown here are based on the Fall of Cybertron game
  • The Dinobots attacking Shockwave near the end of this comic seems to be in homage to a similar scene in Spotlight Shockwave
  • Sentinel Prime's palace is apparently still standing at this point
  • The upcoming Beast Hunters comic seems to be set on Cybertron, as opposed to the Prime TV series' Beast Hunters sub-series being set on Earth (obviously set in the modern era, not just after the Exodus)
