Classified - Battle Mountain

Plot
Ironhide takes on Dr. Porter's tank drones to test if they are capable of taking on Transformers, and easily defeats them, he damages the tanks and is told to stop by Optimus and the humans however.

Ironhide is moaned at for damaging the tanks by Dr. Porter who needs their data to improve them for the next test. Ironhide is introduced to Dr. Porter's son Douglas, who also happened to be the remote control operator for the tank.

Douglas talks with the Autobots, who are somewhat impressed with the young human's abilities, and reveal their own friendship with Kevin to him. Dr. Porter chastises his son for not doing good enough with the tank to defeat Ironhide and tells him to do better next time.
Later Douglas signs on as his alter-ego Stealth Leader, and receives some secret footage of the battle at the army depot a month ago from Simon Clay, where he watches the battle and sees a small human, Kevin Bowman, his girlfriend's brother's friend with the Autobots. Douglas has Clay start to enhance the footage of the cylinder used by Reverb in the battle, and to get ready for a new mission at his father's labs (Clay doesn't know it's Douglas' father's lab though)

Kevin has been escorted back to his house to pick up some of his clothes to return to his new home at the NEST base when he gets emotional, he leaves, along with Gears and the NEST team to get back to his new home.

Kevin and Gears return to the base where they, along with the Autobots are debriefed about the discovery of an energy signal similar to the one at the army depot from a month ago being detected in the mountain ranges around the town of Battle Mountain, and Kevin believes that there's another cylinder there, and his brother was transported there! However before anything can happen, NEST recieves a call from Hyperdynamix Labs about a Decepticon attack.

NEST and the Autobots decide to go to Hyperdynamix and leave the Battle Mountain mission til later. General Marcus asks Kevin and Gears to go see Chief Lindsay in his lab to see if they can give him some more insight into what the cylinder does (since the two of them saw it before and after it was turned on.

The two of them enter the lab, and Kevin learns that Reverb is being held prisoner in the base as well, however neither of them can remember if there were any of the strange marks that are on the cylinder now before it was turned on or not. Kevin learns about Jetfire being able to use his teleportation powers to get to Egypt before, which makes Kevin more hopeful that his brother was just transported somewhere instead of disintegrating.

Kevin gets a phone call from Douglas Porter, who is outside and asks to meet with him, Outside, Kevin and Douglas chat away, and Douglas says that he's detected a Cybertronian message about coordinates, which Gears translates as Battle Mountain. Kevin says he thinks his brother was transported to Battle Mountain by the cylinder, the two humans, Gears and Bumblebee decide to head to Battle Mountain themselves, rather than wait for Optimus and the others to come back so they can save Kevin's brother.
After they leave however, an MP3 player that Douglas forgot in the area is left alone....

At Hyperdynamix, Dr Porter finds out that all his prototype tanks are missing, but the R & D section hasn't been breached yet, and the attack is still taking place. Clay reports to Douglas that the mission is a success, but Optimus has arrived and they need to leave, but Douglas orders that they stay, for the next part of the plan to succeed. The Autobots and NEST take on the Decepticons and help defend the lab, whilst Dr Porter reports about the tanks going missing, which confuses everyone as to what the Decepticon's objectives could be.

Outside the NEST base Douglas convinces Gears to take on a new alternate mode that isn't rusty and they head off. On the way to Battle Mountain, Gears and Kevin start a game of 20 questions again, and Douglas helps Kevin with some tricks to help him get the answers easier.
At the NEST base, the MP3 player transforms into a drone piloted by a human elsewhere, it infiltrates Reverb's jail and frees the Decepicon, Reverb escapes and takes on a new Jeep mode and sets off for Battle Mountain as well, so he can get at Gears, which the MP3 controller revealed to him.

Still on the way to Battle Mountain, the humans get hungry, so Bumblebee picks up some food through a drive in for them (he uses NEST credit card numbers, and uses his radio to tell the kiosk operator to leave the food through his window, and then passes it into Gears' window for the kids to eat) rather than Gears taking a small detour and having the kids get it themselves.
At Hyperdynamix the Autobots are looking for the Decepticons in the lab, when Optimus learns of Reverb's escape fromt the NEST base, and that Gears and the others have left, he assumes they've headed to Battle Mountain. Optimus orders Ironhide to get there himself as well, ASAP.

Gears and the others arrive at Battle Mountain, where they encounter Blowback, and engage him. Kevin and Douglas however run off towards the mountain range, to look for the storehouse themselves. The Autobots battle Blowback, and try to keep the fight out of the town itself. The two Humans find the entrance and manage to open it the way Gears opened the one from Hawthorne a month ago, and they enter it, with Kevin screaming for his brother.

Blowback reveals that he has reinforcements in the form of Sawtooth, Burnrate and Roadrash in the area, and the four Decepticons gang up on the two Autobots. During the fierce battle Blowback accidentally kills Roadrash.
Inside the storehouse Kevin doesn't find his brother, but all the weapons inside are decayed and rusted, due to a leak somewhere at some time entering the store and ruining everything. They find a second corridor, but the door is sealed shut, they find a monitor on the wall, which analyses their speach to be able to talk in English and communicates with them (though it's systems are dying due to the damage inside). It asks for the code to access the door, but they don't have it, but are told that if they can say what is inside the store then they will be allowed access, but they only have 12 attempts, including questions about the item before the esystem locks down, meaning they have to play a dangerous game of "20 questions" here to try and save Duane.

Outside the battle continues, Bumblebee kills Sawtooth and they prepare to battle remaining two Decepticons.
Inside the store Douglas starts asking questions, but the monitor is dying, Douglas takes out his phone and shows the monitor an image of the cylinder from Hawthorne from the footage he has and asks if that's the item  inside the store, and it confirms it, opening the door.
The last two Decepticons are killed, and the two Autobots start to head for the store as well.
Inside the store the humans find the cylinder intact, unlike the one in the base and douglas starts recording it. Kevin goes into the corridor again and asks the monitor how the cylinder works, and it says that it needs certain coordinates and transports all those in it's range to those coordinates in space, and then it dies out. Gears and Bumblebee arrive in the area.

Gears and the others prepare to move the cylinder when Gears sees Reverb heading into the town below, Ironhide arrives and Douglas asks if they're going to go after the Decepticon, as he can get a Hyperdynamix truck to transport the cylinder for them, but Ironhide refuses, saying that he's going to transport it. (Ironhide doesn't like/trust Douglas) and has them all load into a NEST transport with the cylinder to return to base.

The Decepticons at Hyperdynamix are found and killed, and the team from Battle Mountain return to base, with Optimus upset with their actions, but Douglas takes full blame as it was his idea. The Cylinder is taken to Lindsay's labto be examined, but they learn that the coordinates could be to anywhere, and there seems to only be one use in each cylinder, meaning they can't just keep testing it. At Hyperdynamix, Dr Porter asks his son why the Decepticons would keep attacking despite the tanks already being gone, but he doesn't know what to say.
Later, Reverb has been led to Simon Clay's home, where he'll be situated now with the human. Douglas contacts them to tell them that he'll be working on a new plan to defeat the Autobots soon, and allow Reverb to lead his own army (the tanks)
At home, Douglas laments his loss of the cylinder, but is glad about gaining the trust of everyone, bar Ironhide, and looks at another still from the footage from earlier, with a clear image of the coordinates on the cylinder, and considered how to use it, even the possibility of Kevin seeing it one day.

On a blue planet far away, Duane and his team are getting ready for another night on this starnge world with wolf-like monsters roaming around, and Duane promises his team to get them home....

Notes
  • This story is set about a month after the previous one (Switching Gears)
  • This story establishes that there are other weapons stores on Earth, which survived the natural shifting of Earth (though the one here was flooded at some point and therefore ruined too)
  • This story shows Gears changing his alternate mode from an SUV to a smaller car, and Reverb taking on a Jeep mode (despite his toy and cover appearances have him in his motorcycle body) meaning that characters in this continuity at least aren't limited to certain sized alternate forms
  • The party Douglas threw for his girlfriend in the previous story was used to give him a cover-story for his whereabouts during the battles he set up.
  • Gears and Kevin have taken a liking to playing "20 questions" with each other, however Gears keeps making his answers things that Kevin couldn't possibly know about from Cybertron or other planets.
  • The next part of this story is out in September 2013, and is called Satellite of Doom.
  • Sawtooth COULD be a reference to the Movie One toy Mudflap, who's original repaint name idea was also called Sawtooth. I'm not sure though, so I won't put his alternate mode as a crane here, just in case.
  • Ironhide is only cast member here shown to mistrust Douglas, he's also the only one here to die in DOTM...coincidence?

IDW - Bots of Science

Plot
The Decepticons attack the Hydrax Plateau and the Autobots send in reinforcements to deal with them, shortly afterwards the Autobots lose contact with the troops stationed there, so Magnus sends Ratchet in to see if anyone is injured.
Ratchet arrives and finds everyone dead from Cosmic Rust exposure, but finds a Decepticon, Oil Slick alive amongst the bodies, Ratchet ignores Ultra Magnus' orders to leave him, as he's a Decepticon, but Ratchet doesn't listen, justifying it that the soldiers wouldn't have known the effects of cosmic rust.
Oil Slick reveals that he knows of a cure to Cosmic Rust, that he and Ratchet can create together to save him. The two of them work together to create the anti-virus and Ratchet uses it to cure his new friend, but after being cured Oil Slick attacks Ratchet and infects him, as he leaves however, Ratchet uses his magnets to steal the gun with the anti-virus in it and cures himself, then drives off back home, with the anti-virus in tow.

Notes
  • This story is mostly identical to the regular IDW Animated comic release of this same story, except that this version had a few extra pages as a prologue and has lots of narrative added (as this is an adventures in reading book)
  • Wow! Lookit all those cameo characters! I look forward to seeing them all later in other med-Oh they're all dead....
  • Some of the cameo characters (RID Optimus, Cybertron Megatron) already have existing counterparts in TFA, so I'll just use their Japanese names for the character lists instead
  • Saying that though, Motormaster is later seen in the Botcon 2011 toyline and comic, and it was explained that following his "death" here he was repaired and placed in a new body
  • The cosmic rust cure is later used off-screen on Rodimus after Oil Slick infected him in Season 3
  • The Red scientist looks a bit like an altered Blurr, also one of the fighters looks like a yellow Blurr's vehicle mode.

TFCC - A Flash Forward #6

Plot
Jhiaxus' Firecons attack the freed Autobots, but are able to fight them and the Sharkticons off. Pyro reveals that he knows that Hi-Q is in Jhiaxus' chest compartment and has Blaze free him, the Autobots escape from the lab as it starts to explode.
Outside Ironhide, Bumblebee and Mirage stop the Autobots from leaving, whilst on the roof Nightracer is watching and thinks this is all wrong, she's soon joined by the Battlechargers and Side Burn, who has just recovered all his memories thanks to the battle sounds below, Nightracer says that he has to stay with them as they're a team, but Side Burn instead says that she should come with him and the Autobots instead.
The Autobot Clones are convinced that if they come with the Autobots they can live in peace, and that Jhiaxus lied about them being just warmongers. Sky-Byte says to Jhiaxus that he can't let them leave, but Jhiaxus just says that he doesn't care as he has more clones, and that this just proves that he needs to kill the older generations before releasing his new Transformers.
Later, the Autobots have returned to Earth and the Battlechargers are given leniency for helping Side Burn before. Everyone is happy, except for Sizzle who comes up to the group and reveals his most recent vision: The Machine Wars are coming!
In Axiom Nexus, the Trans Techs are monitoring the multiverse for more damages after the Shattered Glass version of Ultra Magnus destroyed the Classics Universe, and have detected that some more universes are folding in on themselves and being destroyed as a result, but more worryingly that 2 small ships from the Classics Universe were also pulled into another universe, a previously time-locked one where the Origin Matrix is located!
Soon two of the Primes recruited by the local Optimus head to a seedy location, where they find some Transformers from various universes playing a poker game, and they recruit Depth Charge for a mission.

Elsewhere in Axiom Nexus, Aquarius is playing the Transformers I.Q. game when a smaller Transformer returned with a shard of a "cosmic blade" which "the big guy" needs, and agrees to send her back to her home universe (whilst quoting Wizard of Oz a lot)

Notes
  • The images shown on the screen in the epilogue are different from those seen in the pre-released version used to advertise the Sub Service figures
  • It's unclear how Pyro knew that Hi-Q was in Jhiaxus' chest, since his ability only lets him see a few seconds into the future
  • Sizzle's premonition about needing to get a parking ticket is revealed here to be because he needed the time to have his distant future vision of the Botcon 2013 storyline (based on Machine Wars it seems)
  • It's not shown if the Clones of Rumble and Soundwave joined the others in leaving with the Autobots
  • On the screens in the epilogue the Tracks seen is being turned into his yellow alternators repaint it seems (and Galvatron seems to be turning into a repaint as well)
  • The Origin Matrix shown here looks like the one that comes with Big Convoy (is it a coincidence that one of the sub service figures is a repaint of him (Ultra Mammoth)
  • Is it weird that the freebie figure for 2013 seems to be getting a bigger role than the many figures that you have to spend a load of money for?

IDW - Spotlight Orion Pax

Title: Omega's Conundrum
Story by: James Roberts
Pencils by: Steve Kurth
Inks by: Juan Castro
Colors by: J.Aburtov and Graphikslava
Letters by: Shawn Lee
Editor: John Barber
Editorial Assistant: Thomas Boeing
Plot
Four Million Years ago, Orion Pax has been refitted into a new body thanks to his connections and friendship with the newly elected Zeta Prime. Pax is debriefed on a mission by Zeta and Nightbeat to perform a hostage exchange for Ratchet in the Rust Spot, who was captured by the Decepticons.
Orion Pax (the copper), Nightbeat (the hostage negotiator) and Alpha Trion (the Rust Spot expert) head out with a trailer holding the Decepticon hostage for the exchange. On the way to the rendezvous point in the Rust Spot the team is attacked by Slicers and a quick battle takes place, with the Autobots easily winning.

During the battle, the trailer is opened, and the hostage is revealed to be no more than a pair of grunts, Rack and Ruin. Pax goes to talk to them, and asks why they follow Megatron, and other things, they beg them not to give them back to the Decepticons as they'll be killed.
Thundercracker, Acid Storm and Skywarp arrive on the scene to escort Pax and the others to Bludgeon's base, where they hand over the hostages, and Bludgeon releases Ratchet, fully intending to honor the deal, except that they also intend to take Alpha Trion too (which explains why they had the exchange take place in the Rust Spot, as Trion would have to be the choice of escort in that area) Bludgeon reveals that Megatron wants Alpha Trion, so they can get access to Metroplex, and use him to create a Space Bridge to spread their cause across the universe.
Orion Pax reveals his own trick, by having his trailer eject weapons for him and his team to fight back with, Trion breaks free of his binds and joins the fight. Rack and Ruin break free too, and lead the Autobots to safety, whilst Orion Pax causes a distraction, but ends up being captured.

Bludgeon has Pax strapped to a shuttle, which is set to auto pilot and crash into a random city, as an act of terrorism (which Thundercracker is horrified at. The shuttle is launched and Pax is doomed, but he's glad that the ship's trajectory is actually bad and will miss any city, until it rams into another shuttle, that was just happening to pass by and redirects the shuttle to Iacon itself!
Pax does something stupid, and performs and instant transformation (as mentioned by Rack and Ruin earlier to him) despite it being dangerous in his new body to push his transformation cog too much. He manages to snap his chains and smashes into the cockpit and redirects it again into the wilderness nearby.

Orion Pax's new body is damaged, but he's alive, and saved Iacon. Yay!

Notes
  • This story explains why Orion Pax was shown in a totally different body during Spotlight: Blurr, despite having the same body both before and after these events. His body change was because this new one is better suited for the environment in The Rust Spot.
  • NIGHTBEAT!!!!
  • Ahem...Nightbeat is a hostage negotiator in these times rather than a detective, it's unclear whether this was his original vocation, or if he was a detective before this and just took on a new role during the war.
  • Alpha Trion is shown using his protective cloak thing again here, this is possible because he's afraid of the weather in The Rust Spot, but then again he was seen wearing it in Autocracy as well (then again, Trion is a bit of a nut)
  • Alpha Trion mentions how he once explored Cybertron with Metroplex...me thinks this be a clue to Alpha Trion being a Knight of Cybertron!
  • Rack and Ruin used to have a triplet, but no one remembers his name
  • It's likely Starscream was going to be one of the seekers seen in this issue, but was changed to Acid Storm because Screamer is meant to be undercover still as shown in Autocracy
  • Megatron is obsessed with Gestalts in this time period...wonder if anything will come of that?
  • Rack and Ruin hate the idea of being a combiner (it's funny when you know what happens to them in the future)
  • Megatron seems to have a soft spot of sorts for Orion Pax, as he tells Bludgeon to not harm Pax, and he talks about him. Plus in Autocracy he joins forces with Pax, rather than just killing him.

IDW - Robots in Disguise #12

Title: City on Fire
Written by: John Barber
Art by: Andrew Griffith
Colors by: Josh Perez
Letters by: Shawn Lee
Editor: Carlos Guzman
Plot
Prowl is taken to Fixit's Med-Center for repairs after being caught in the explosion at the Decepticon pen, when Starscream walks in and tells Wheeljack to tell Bumblebee (as he knows Bee won't believe him) that Megatron has returned and is heading to the city.
Bumblebee, his security force, Metalhawk and Starscream stop Megatron from entering the city and Bumblebee gives the order to kill the heavily damaged Decepticon, who claims to be there in peace. Despite the Autobots all firing on him he doesn't fall. Needlenose stops the firing by pointing out that Megatron is unarmed, and that he was a hero during the Chaos event and should be treated that way now. The Autobots agree to stop the attack, but Bumblebee has Wheeljack place Megatron inside his forcefield bubble.
Megatron is later taken to the prison where Wheeljack confirms who he is, and that he's unarmed. Megatron keeps calling out to Bumblebee, but Bee refuses to talk to him, especially after how he affected Optimus last time they spoke. Metalhawk arrives and is worried that Megatron's return will restart the war, and endanger the NAIL's, during the conversation Bee, Wheeljack and Metalhawk realize that basically all of the heavy-hitters from the Autobots and Decepticons have been taken out lately, and that Starscream seems to be the only one who's been gaining anything...

Starscream arrives at the ruins of the Decepticon Pen to address the Decepticons, who are supposed to be looking for survivors, but finds a mob being formed, Starscream tries to convince them that they should forget about Megatron and give peace a chance, but they ignore him and start their rioting anyway. Wheeljack arrives to check up on Starscream on Metalhawk's suggestion, which disappoints him as he thought Metalhawk was his only friend, he goes off on his own.
Wheeljack receives a message from Fixit to get back to the Med-Center, back there, he finds that prowl has gone missing from his Regeneration Chamber, and that when they check the surveillance footage of his quarters, they find it as a black spot, and they wonder why. Wheeljack leaves to go find Prowl, just as the riots start to mount.

Blurr battens down the hatches at Maccadam's with some of his patrons still inside, including Tankor/Octane and Squawkbox, with Jazz also inside to help defend them in case the rioters break in. Arcee appears from a ceiling vent and offers to make a deal with Blurr.
Starscream arrive at the jail and insists on being let inside, where he goes to Megatron's cell and says they need a chat.
Wheeljack is caught up in the riots and his presence itself causes it to escalate, and he's beaten down by Cindersaur and Staxx, who plan to break Turmoil and the others out of jail and give him to Jail as a gift (as he helped arrest him before). Suddenly Staxx is blasted through his back by a fully repaired and upgraded Prowl, who invites the Decepticons to try to resist him...

Notes
  • Starscream's learned his lesson! Rather than trying the kill Megatron alone, he tells everyone else about his return and has them try as well!
  • On Page 2 you can still see the Decepticon Pen on fire, nice bit of continuity there!
  • Needlenose appears to be trying to take on a leadership role now
  • It's pointed out here that a lot of the big players from both sides have been being taken out recently, whilst we know that Prowl was responsible for the Decepticon deaths, it makes you wonder if he does have anything to do with the Autobot disappearances etc
  • Octane being fine with just hanging out in the bar instead of rioting could be a reference to his role in the G1 cartoon
  • On the same note, it's mentioned that the Cassettes and Triple Changers were amongst those missing after the Pen's destruction, which also just happens to be what Slamdance and Octane are as well (the only two Decepticons seen to be content with peace in this issue)

Classified - Switching Gears

Plot
The Decepticons, Bombshock, Tracer and Dropshot walk into the area around an airbase and are noticed by a soldier, who calls for help, soon a load of military vehicles arrive and take on the robots, the battle commences and the Decepticons are easily winning, but remember to be careful as they're being watched by Simon Clay, a member of a clandestine group of Humans, who are working with some Decepticons for some reason. Nearby, a small family are driving by, and the son records the battle on his phone and plans to post it on his blog, but his greedy mother wants to sell it to a news program instead.
The Decepticons are still winning their battle, albeit with Bombshock injured, when Optimus and Ironhide unexpectedly are airdropped in.

Optimus and Ironhide join the battle and easily take down Tracer and Dropshot. Bombshock threatens to kill a load of humans if Optimus doesn't surrender, but the two Autobots instead quickly take him out, however Optimus is worried due to a transmission he picked up during the battle between the three Decepticons and another unknown person. Clay contacts his boss, who tells him to return to base now.

Kevin is around his friend Gilbert's house trying to study for an assignment for school, but Gilbert's sister's boyfriend Douglas has thrown her a party and it's too loud. The two boys decide to join the party and get something to eat instead. At the party Kevin sees a news report on the TV about the battle, and gets angry, as he hates the robots.

At Edwards Air Base, Ratchet, Bumblebee and some NEST officers are waiting for Optimus and Ironhide to return when they see the news report about the fight in Nevada when they pick up the signal of some Cybertronians arriving on the planet and head out to see who they are.

Kevin gets annoyed at the party when Douglas turns over the TV report and says that the robots are just a hoax, but Kevin says that's not true, as his parents were killed during the robot battle in Mission City, Kevin leaves the party in a strop. On the way home Kevin sees a meteorite falling nearby, and decides to go investigate it, and see if it can get him a good grade at school, since he can't do his homework with the party happening.

Ratchet and Bumblebee are being airlifted to the crash site, but are 20 minutes away, and wonder what trouble can happen in the time it takes them to get there. Kevin arrives at the crash site, and finds a robot coming out of the impact zone and watches as the robot stand nearby. Kevin gets afraid and accidentally lets off the flash on his phone, alerting the robot to his presence, Kevin backs away with his bike in fear, but the robot grabs him, just as another vehicle smashes into his bike, crushing it. Kevin thanks the robot (Gears) for him saving his life, and the two introduce themselves to eachother.
In the vehicle that almost hit Kevin, Clay is shaken and needs to calm down, as the last thing he needs is to have a hit and run to deal with right now. He continue on back to base again.

Kevin's brother (and legal guardian) Duana calls to see how he is, but during the conversation his phone goes dead as a second meteor arrives, which Gears identifies as Reverb, who has the ability to black out machinery. The two robots fight, and Gears wins, he opts not to kill him, in case he booby-trapped himself in case of death, Gears scans an old SUV nearby and takes it on as his alternate mode. Kevin gets inside and leaves with Gears, as he detected local authorities on their way before.

Gears explains to Kevin that he's on Earth to secure and guard a munitions stronghold nearby before the Decepticons can get to it, Kevin thinks he means the Hawthorne Army Depot, where his brother works and tries to call him, but Gears says that Reverb fried it when he landed. Gears tries to take Kevin back to his home, but Kevin insists on him joining him to Hawthorne, as he knows where it, and Gears doesn't. The two of them plan to erect a hologram over Kevin, so they can use him to get past the security.

Ratchet, Bumblebee and the NEST team land at the crash site and find Reverb alive, Reverb lies and says he's a Decepticon defector and that Gears killed a human child and was on the way to Hawthorne. The Autobots aren't sure if it's true so they take him with them (in restraints) to check on Hawthorne.

Gears and Kevin are stopped by a roadblock and put up the hologram, and manage to talk their way in by pretending that Duane is expecting him. Ratchet and Bumblebee are on their way to Hawthorne with Reverb and use inter-Autobot radio to talk about how Bumblebee doesn't believe his story, but Ratchet wants to believe that he's a defector, as that's what they've been wanting for decades now.

Ironhide and Optimus are in a warehouse waiting to return to base, when they are told about the meteors and communications black out in Nevada, and Optimus deduces that the attack earlier was just a test or something for what is actually happening, and asks what else is of worth nearby, Optimus suggests Hawthorne, but doesn't think it's important enough for this type of attack, but the reaction of some of the Generals in the room tells him that there's something more important there as well.

The two are inside Hawthorne's perimeter, and Gears tries to ditch Kevin again, but Kevin exploits that Gears' internal compass is playing up, and makes him take him with him again, the two of them get talking, and Kevin explains that his parents were killed by the Decepticons in Mission City, and Gears tells Kevin that Reverb killed his friend Tailgate 10 years ago (given more of a reason for his hunting him down). Gears detects two objects approaching them and tells Kevin to get to a safe point.

Gears is attacked by a pair of human-made radio controlled tanks and engages them in battle, he quickly takes them down, and the two run off towards their goal, an old hill, which is on top of the munitions store, Gears explains that it's an ancient Cybertronian store, not human made and the two enter the store to start the defence of it. They hear a helicopter outside and Gears goes to present himself to them as an Autobot, but when they get out they see Reverb, who breaks free of his restraints and attacks Gears, who in turn goes to protect Kevin.

Ratchet and Bumblebee are watching the fight, and are unsure who to help when Kevin appears and explains that Gears is an Autobot and Reverb is the Decepticon. Gears and Reverb fight inside the cave-store and Reverb knocks out Gears with his cannon. Outside, Duane and his team arrive and the two brothers reunite and he asks his brother for help against Reverb.

Inside the cave Reverb goes through the weapons and grabs a cylinder one and plans to test it on the Autobots and humans outside before bringing it to Megatron. Reverb exits and attacks the Autobots, and uses the cylinder weapon on the humans, including Duane, seemingly vaporizing them all. Kevin runs to Gears as he has a plan to defeat Reverb, just as Reverb is about to kill Ratchet, Optimus and Ironhide arrive.

Reverb manages to use his new weapons to defeat all the Autobots, but he sees Tailgate entering the cave behind him (Gears has erected a hologram of his dead friend over Kevin as a distraction). Inside the cave Reverb is ambushed by Gears, and the Autobots defeat him, but they refuse to kill him, taking him prisoner instead.
In the aftermath, Gears is introduced to the other Autobots and Kevin learns that the cylinder object isn't a wepaon at all, it's a transporter, meaning that Duane and his team might not be dead after all, just sent elsewhere.

Kevin is allowed to stay with the Autobots at NEST due to his parents being dead, and his brother missing, on the condition that he needs to keep up school work with a tutor, and Gears volunteers to act as his guardian.
Elsewhere Clay contacts his boss again to say that he's returned to base, and that Reverb failed in his mission, but his boss corrects him that it was a success as they now know more for Project Nightbridge, and that their next step is soon.
Douglas Porter  hangs up his phone, revealed to the audience as being Clay's boss. DUN DUN DUH!!!!

Notes
  • This novel is set some point after Revenge of the Fallen, but definitely before Dark of the Moon (since Ironhide is still alive here)
  • However no characters from after the first movie appeared here (The Fallen was mentioned however)
  • Bombshock seems to be based on the PCC toy
  • It's a bit weird that they used Tailgate as the friend who died here...couldn't they have used another character from the toyline who hadn't appeared anywhere else yet?
  • Despite the message from The Fallen in ROTF, not everyone seems to believe that Earth has been invaded by giant robots, it's also not common knowledge that they can turn into vehicles
  • Why is Douglas Porter so insistent on people not believing in the Transformers as being real? I'm sure that'll be a plot point in a future novella!
  • Bumblebee mostly communicates with internal Autobot radio in this story rather than using sound bytes...YAY!!
  • There being hidden Cybertronian weapons caches on Earth is reused in Prime with the artifacts of Iacon.
  • Unusually, this novella reveals the name of the next part (Battle Mountain) at the end, implying that this entire series has been planned out in some detail before production.
  • This comic can still be in continuity with the IDW Movie comics as well, as Gears never appeared there, and Reverb was still alive by the start of the DOTM comics.

IDW - Regeneration One #86

Title: Natural Selection Part One
Writer: Simon Furman
Penciler: Andrew Wildman
Inker: Stephen Baskerville
Colorist: John-Paul Bove
Letterer: Chris Mowry
Editor: John Barber
Editor-in-Chief: Chris Ryall
Plot
Five Years ago the other Dinobots blame Grimlock for infecting them and several others with Nucleon years earlier, which, whilst making Slag stronger has made him feral and trapped in his beast mode. Grimlock leaves, but promises to make everything better.
In the present Scorponok has captured Grimlock and tries to make him join his new group, but the Dinobot keeps declining. Scorponok explains how his old head was reattached to a replica of his original body, but when he was reattached he managed to take control and brainwashed the populace of Nebulos.

On Cybertron Hot Rod and the others wonder what to do about the intruder in the Hall of Silence, but in the end Hot Rod reluctantly orders for the charges set around the hall to explode, hoping to kill the intruder and destroy the Matrix Reservoir inside Thunderwing's remains.

On Earth the Autobots dump all the dead Transformers who Megatron revived inside a pit, including some Autobots and Megatron. Optimus is distressed about having to kill Megatron the way he did, but Kup and the others try to console him, shortly afterwards Circuit Smasher and some other humans tell Optimus that they voted, and the Autobots have to leave, as they don't want them involved in the rebuilding of Earth at all.
The Autobots finish their dumping of the dead and leave before Magnus can blast the pit, vaporizing the remains, however Starscream wakes up before he's hit and flies off.

On Nebulos Grimlock wakes up and tries to escape, but encounters Slag, who he assumes is under Scorponok's control, however when the other Dinobots arrive and they charge Grimlock, still blaming him for everything. Just as they kill him, Grimlock is awoken by Scorponok, who had him inside the Mindscape for torture, after which Grimlock agrees to join him.
Scorponok reveals that he plans to turn all Cybertronians into Decepticons using a Gene Key designed by Zarak before his death.

On Earth Roadbuster and Sunstreaker are patrolling around the Ark and lament on how it's impossible to patrol the whole area as it's so large, and just as they say so, Starscream arrives in the area, slowly followed by Galvatron!

Notes
  • Not everyone who was revived by Nucleon were affected, Snarl, Sludge and Swoop don't appear to be affected at all, unlike several others
  • Seriously! Why does Scorponok just happen to have a replica of Grimlock's body?!?!
  • I doubt that that explosion will have killed Soundwave for some reason
  • Not all the transformers revived by Megatron were Decepticons, as Grotusque was amongst the army of the dead, meaning that for some reason Grimlock decided not to revive him back in the old days (jerk)
  • Optimus doesn't want his injuries fixed in memory of those who died...wonder how long that'll last?
  • Yay...Optimus is depressed again after Ratchet dies....how many times is this now?
  • Why did the Autobots not take the bodies of the dead Autobots back to Cybertron with them? Why have them vaporized too?!
  • Wonder if it's a coincidence that the Gene Key program is shaped like a stylized key?
  • Why didn't the Autobots update their alternate modes for icy terrain for their perimeter checks around the Ark...or you know, use guys who can fly or something?

IDW/TFCC - Balancing Act

Balancing Act Plot
Vector Prime is doing his rounds around the Multiverse and detects that Unicron has been killed (in Energon) and that the balance between good and evil has been disturbed and a giant black hole has been formed that threatens to destroy all of reality. Vector Prime returns to that universe to help them resolve the situation by finding the Omega Lock and Cyber Keys to return the balance.

Some time later Ramjet, his Mini-Cons and Nemesis Prime escape from an interdimensional prison and head to Cybertron to destroy it for their master, Unicron.. Upon arriving on the deserted planet they find some leftover Decepticons and kill them for being annoying. Vector Prime returns to Cybertron following some adventures on Earth and meets with Alpha Trion, whom is also trying to help out with the mission by summoning Sentinel Maximus (from the Universe: Wreckers comics/prose) to aid them, and informs them that Ramjet has escaped his jail.
Before anything can happen however Ramjet and Nemesis Prime attack them, and badly injures Alpha Trion and damages Vector Sigma before leaving.

Alpha Trion is placed in a CR chamber for repairs, and Vector Prime explains that Ramjet was imprisoned eons ago and that Nemesis Prime was once an Optimus Prime who was corrupted by Unicron in the past. Elsewhere Scorponok's corpse is revived and he is turned into an Energon-hungry zombie. Also, Skyfall arrives on the planet from Velocitron in his shuttle and immediately comes across a hoard of Scrapmetals and Dark Scorponok. Ramjet and Nemesis Prime continue their plot to use the Dead Matrix, held inside Nemesis to destroy Primus' spark on this Cybertron, and then use the Singularity to spread that death across all realities and destroy Primus everywhere.

Skyfall manages to use his forcefield powers to defend against Dark Scorponok's attacks, but is defeated when a building is detonated nearby and collapses on top of them. Ramjet's Mini-Cons approach Scorponok and offer him more fuel if he comes with them, taking him to the Energon reserves in Kalis, where Sentinel Maximus and Vector Prime have just arrived too, thus a battle ensues.
Elsewhere, Skyfall, having freed himself is found by Ramjet who says that he knows who Skyfall really is (which Skyfall doesn't) and will tell him if he helps him out

Scorponok gets the upper hand in his battle with Sentinel Maximus, but is killed when an unknown ally shoots Scorponok with the Auto-Guns, afterwards Downshift contacts them over the communicators calling for help, the two use Vector Prime's sword to warp over there, and join the battle before Downshift can be killed.

Vector Prime and Ramjet fly off, smashing out of the planet and into the atmosphere for their battle, whilst Sentinel Maximus chases Nemesis Prime through the tunnels, but is trapped under rubble, allowing Nemesis Prime to enter Primus' spark chamber and opens the Dead Matrix....
Revelations Plot
Vector Prime manages to take down Ramjet using his Cyber Key Power and destabilizes him, Skyfall sees this and screams out in protest as he needs him for information. Inside Primus' spark chamber Nemesis Prime is attacked by a newly arrived Omega Prime (from Robots in Disguise) who splits apart to deal with this situation.
Above, Vector Prime is about to seal Ramjet in a prison again when Skyfall appears and tries to defend him, but when Ramjet tries to use Skyfall's shield too it overloads and sends him hurtling into the prison anyway. In the chamber again Optimus Prime uses his Matrix to fix the damage caused by Nemesis Prime's Dead Matrix whilst Magnus is beating down the evil Prime, afterwards Sentinel Maximus breaks free of the rubble and the three start to talk.

Later, everyone regroups and Optimus and Magnus explain how they were on their way back to their own dimension following the destruction of the Unicron they were on during the Universe Conflict, but were transported here for some reason. Vector Prime is about to reveal to the others who Skyfall is, and why he is so important to keep safe, when suddenly he is transported away. The transporter reveals himself as Over-Run, the former leader of the Mini-Cons who died by Starscream's hand a few years ago, but was able to upload his mind into Cybertron itself, and that he was the one who killed Scorponok before.
Vector Prime has returned to Earth, where he rejoins the mission, and Over-Run asks the others to help him to fix Cybertron, and Vector Sigma, and to also place the Dead Matrix from Nemesis Prime into the rare items locker.

Later, Soundwave sends Laserbeak into the locker and retrieves the Dead Matrix and flings it into the black hole, freeing Unicron's spark. The spark flies into the planet Yst, where his presence corrupts the planet and it's inhabitants, turning them cannibal until the planet dies and explodes over time, creating a new body for Unicron, freeing him.

Later, Sentinel and Skyfall are fixing Vector Sigma and Over-Run shows Skyfall an image he found that seems to resemble him, with another figure from over 25 million cycles ago, during their investigations and repairs they receive a message from the Mini-Con Anti-Blaze who says there's some Decepticon and Decepticon-allied Mini-Cons causing problems at an Energon Mining Facility.
The Autobots agree to help and head to the mining asteroids above Cybertron and meets the Mini-Cons who called for help. A battle ensues between the Autobots and Decepticons (and the affiliated Mini-Cons), and the battle is watched by Unicron and Soundwave, who plan to join in too.
During the battle Skyfall encounters the Decepticon Landquake, and both seem to recognize eachother from somewhere. After some more battling between the others Unicron appears and starts slaughtering the Mini-Cons, and revealing that he was responsible for the uprising of the bad Mini-Cons here. The battle goes insane with the inclusion of Unicron, but gets stranger when Cybertron starts to fall apart nearby.

Skyfall and Landquake use their Energon based powers to protect themselves from the battle, as they both want to discuss their shared past, however the battle destabilizes the Energon and causes it to explode, seemingly killing the duo, much to the shock of Sentinel Maximus.
The battle continues until Cybertron fully transforms into Primus, and Unicron is scared off.
Later the Autobots meet up with the local Optimus Prime and his team, and learn of Vector Prime's death. The displaced Optimus promises to track down Unicron and defeat him, whilst the Mini-Con Council of Sages plan to take down all the remaining insurgents from the attack earlier, and everyone mourns the death of their pal Skyfall.

Somewhere very, very far away Skyfall and Landquake are spat out of a portal where they are encountered by the Megatron of the Classicsverse.

Notes
  • This is the IDW collection of the first 2 years of TFCC comics, to make it easier for me I'm just combining them here, especially since it's one big storyline
  • It turns out Vector Prime has witnessed and intervened whenever a cataclysmic event occurs, such as when the Predacon Megatron tried to kill Optimus Prime whilst sleeping
  • This story implies that the Cybertron TV series is actually a sequel to the Armada and Energon Dreamwave comic, with Over-Run's involvement, and also shows his fate from that aborted series
  • This story also shows that with Unicron's death the Unicron nodule from the Universe series (also aborted) just died as well, and so all the captured Transformers escape through a Space Bridge.
  • The "bad" Mini-Cons appear to be using the Energon weapons generated by the Terrorcons
  • Scrapmetals might be Terrorcons as well, considering what Ramjet says
  • The Mini-con who was with Landquake when he's introduced is unnamed, but was probably his Mini-Con partner.
  • Downshift's drastically different bodies from the Energon and Cybertron lines are explained here as being because he was so badly injured in his earlier body, that he needed to reformat for repairs.
  • Here's a confusing thing, the Mini-Con insurgents are made up of Mini-Cons that were from both Autobots and Decepticons in the Cybertron toyline, and also include a Skyblast as well!
