IDW - Transformers vs G.I. Joe #1

Title: I Saw Three Ships
Written by: Tom Scioli and John Barber
Art, Colours and Lettering by: Tom Scioli
Production by: Chris Mowry
Edits by: Carlos Guzman
Plot
General Flagg shouts at Snake-Eyes, whilst he's living out a peaceful life in solitude and basically forces him to re-enlist in GI Joe.
The Joes go full out in a battle with a Cobra group, led by Tomax and Xamot, but which ends with the Twins being captured by the Joes. Elsewhere, Destro wants to send in reinforcements, but the new Cobra leader, Serpentress tells him not to, as she wants the Joes to believe that Cobra is disorganized following Cobra Commander's death.

Duke and Scarlett travel to a mystery location to discuss with the heads of GI Joe about an incoming asteroid, which they know to be an alien species from a planet called Cybertron, and that the aliens within want a meeting.

Later, three alien ships appear and Hawk meets with the aliens inside. One of them, Ravage, talks with Hawk about the humans surrendering to the Decepticons. Before long Snake-Eyes for some reason shoots Hawk from afar (but doesn't kill or seemingly hurt him at all) and a fight breaks out. The ships turn into giant robots (Starscream, Shockwave and Soundwave) and start attacking the Joes.

It's revealed that earlier the Joes remembered the fight from Issue #0 and the robots who were involved, and decide to get the Colton Bolt ready for usage if needed. The battle continues in the present, and the Joes run away at the last second before the Colton Bolt shoots down a death beam from space and bits the larger Transformers which Laserbeak and Rumble fly away, only to be captured by Cobra in a ship of their own, and are offered sanctuary with them.

Later the Joes return to base, when Flagg receives a message from Scarelett and her team on the ship, Defiant, where they are approaching Cybertron, intending to invade it....yeah....

Notes
  • I would just like to begin these notes by mentioning that I am not really a major GI Joe fan, so I have NO idea who a lot of the unnamed characters are in this comic (and the bad art doesn't help much with identification)
  • A lot of scenes seem to suddenly jump from one scene to another without any sort of narrative (such as the non-transition between page 1 and 2)
  • The Serpentress (named in the after-commentary) seems very clear to be the Baroness having survived the explosion in issue #0. The name and design are in homage to Serpentor.
  • Wow, those are some terrible looking Spaceships the Decepticons turn into huh?!
  • Also, the Decepticons all seem to be acting very oddly, they all seem to ACTUALLY worship Megatron as a god, even Starscream....
  • Starscream demonstrates scanning a new alternate mode here when he takes on a Skystriker jet as a new mode (then randomly starts "merping"...I dunno why)
  • I'd guess from the piledrivers that it is Rumble who appears here, despite him having the cartoon's colouring mistake of making him look like Frenzy
  • Hawk's Tomahawk does something to Ravage, again due to the art it's unclear but it seems to have slashed into his head...the characters don't even seem to know what's going on here
  • So the Joes have death rays in orbit around Earth and have built spaceships with the intention of invading an alien world....are we SURE these are the good guys?
  • Also, why do the humans have technology that allows for any of that, including the means to communicate instantly from another planet?!
  • Seriously, I hope there's no oxygen on Cybertron when they land at this rate!
  • Snake-Eyes appears to have broken things off with Scarlett after his injury.
  • I would assume that the bulk of the Joe's spaceship is made from the remains of Bumblebee's spaceship from Issue #0

IDW - Windblade #4

Written by: Mairghread Scott

Editor: John Barber
Plot
Windblade and Chromia are running away from the "Badgeless", heading back to Metroplex to figure out what is happening. The rest of their allies try to distract Starscream, but he quickly overpowers them, and goes after the female Autobots himself as well.
Near Metroplex's brain, Chromia attacks and seemingly kills the two "Badgeless" chasing them, in her roole as bodyguard to Windblade. When they arrive though, they feel the ground shaking, and Chromia dismisses it as a quake, and the duo barricade themselves in the brain chamber, where Windblade prepares to perform a dangerous link up to Metroplex to try and resolves the problems manually.

Starscream quickly breaks through the barricade and fights with Chromia, during the fight, Starscream's sword manages to hit Windblade, just before she's able to make the link up, and he stabs Chromia too, wounding her.
Starscream prepares to kill Windblade, still believing her to be the saboteur, but she makes the link up, and takes control of Metroplex's defenses and attacks and trapps him in some panels.

Windblade, now merged with Metroplex soon learns about the Spacebridge being open, and sees several unknown colony worlds, but cannot seem to find Caminus himself, and then learns through Metroplex's memories that Chromia was the one who had power diverted to the Spacebridge so they could take the Titan back to Caminus. Chromia admits it, and Starscream screams that if she does that, then anyone not fully inside the Titan will be kills in the transit..

Windblade starts to have a conflict of beliefs about what to do, but is brught to her senses by Metroplex himself, and they disable the Spacebridge for now. Windblade then frees Starscream on the condition that he and they kkeep alll that happened that night a secret, in exchange for Starscream being able to use the Spacebridge when Metroplex is repaired to reunite the colony worlds to Cybertron, and truly be the "Chosen One" of legend.

Starscream agrees, and leaves the two Autobots alone. Windblade tells Chromia that she can leave Cybertron if she wants to, but until she can leave, she has to be reliable, and not kill anyone else. Windblade then flies off alone, feeling at one with both Caminus and Cybertron.

Notes
  • The ornament on the left side of Windblade's head dressing is revealed to be a cover for an interface port to connect to a Titan
  • Starscream appears to have become VERY adept at using his swords after just learning he had them a couple of months earlier
  • Knock Out's appearance amongst the other Colony world denizens is clearly a reference to Transformers Prime, which Mairghread worked on.
  • Caminus' face is shown for the first time here, and it is indeed with similar facial markings to Windblade's, as speculated earlier.

Lettering: Comicraft

Cover Date: August 2014
Cover Price: £3.99
Poster: Bumblebee riding Strafe
Plot
Following the battle in Chicago, Optimus, Bumblebee and Crosshairs are on a mission in Indonesia to track down some Decepticon straglers when they fly off. Optimus is cautious as to why the Decepticons leave, despite being in a good position to win the fight. Crosshairs reaveals that he's placed a tracer on one of them and asks to go after them on his own. Optimus allows it, but secretly asks Bumblebee to watch him, as he wants to see what Crosshairs' skills are like.

Later. Crosshairs arrives on a mostly abandoned island where the Decepticons are hiding, expecting a full on assault, but instead are picked off one by one by Crosshairs. After a short battle, only one Decepticon remains, and he mocks the Autobot as he found the tracer earlier. To which Crosshairs laughs that the Decepticon thinks it's JUST a tracer, and sets off a explosion, killing the last one.

Optimus and Bumblebee soon arrive and congratulate him on his victory, but Optimus worries that this event doesn't make sense and there's probablly more to it, which Crosshairs disagrees with...not knowing that Lockdown has been watching the entire fight from a hiding place on the island.

Notes
  • This issue comes with either an Arcee or a Bumblebee PVC figure, as promised last month :)
  • Also included is a promotional booster pack of the Transformers card game, including a Titan exclusive card of Optimus Prime (with art by Horacio Domingues)
  • Optimus and Bumblebee are shown in their new bodies that they scan into DURING Age of Extinction. So they are a bit out of place in this pre-Movie comic. (and it's not like they don't have toys for their "older" modes shown at the start of the film on the shelves right now!)
  • The Decepticons shown are just generics here, why exactly couldn't they have used some random toy-only characters from DOTM for this or something?
  • The artwork in this comic seems a lot higher quality than usual, just as a note!
  • Optimus seems quite happy to have seen Crosshairs murder three Decepticons. This shows how much he's changed since his encounter with Sentinel Prime at the end of DOTM, and backs up his attitude in AOE.
  • From the cover for the next issue, it looks like the next issue will be post-Movie.

IDW - More Than Meets The Eye #31

Title: Twenty Plus One
Written by: James Roberts
Art by: Atilio Rojo
Colours by: Joana LaFuente
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editorial Assistance: Vincent Kings
Editor: John Barber
Plot
About two years ago, Drift, Riptide and Pipes enter the Festival of Lost Light to find the owner of the Quantum Spaceship they saw, and plan to buy it. Drift soon finds the owners and communicates with them through Chirolinguists (hand talking) and buys it from them for a Billion Shanix, with Drift explaining that he just KNOWS it's the right ship for them.

Back in the present, Megatron, on the Rodpod, asks for Riptide to stop talking about how he bought the ship, and for them to concentrate on what happened to the ship in the present, but Nautica apologizes saying she asked for the story as she finds the ship's Quantum engines interesting, as they are impossibly strong. She then theorizes that the engines actually made themselves and the ship vanish into non-existence as a result.
Rodimus contacts the Rodpod telling them to head to the planet Ofsted XVII to rendezvous. Megatron takes a headcount, and finds there to be 20 members of the crew on the shuttle.

Before long, the Crosscut and Cyclonus start discussing the ethics of making a lecture planet like Ofsted run by the council, and for currency, but suddenly the lights go out and Crosscut vanishes. Tailgate immediately thinks Megatron is responsible and aims a gun at him and suggests they lock him up, but Megatron takes out his own hand gun and aims at the small Autobot, saying he wont be imprisoned again, leading to Riptidde aiming a gun at him too. Cyclonus tries to make everyone calm down, leading to Huffer and Gears turning on him, bringing up his involvement on the Kimia attack as evidence of his evilness.
Nearby, Hound aims his gun at Nautica, who seems shocked, until she learns that Ravage has been hiding under her console and he was the one being aimed at. The lights go out again, and Megatron shoots Ravage, saving Hound from his pounce. Unknown to the others, Megatron talks to Ravage through Chirolinguistics, telling him to play dead, and that the crew are starting to trust him. Meanwhile, Nautica notices that more of the crew have vanished.

The crew try to determine why people are vanishing when the lights turn off, and Nightbeat believes it may be something to do with people being Forged or not, like with Tyrest's device. However when everyone's status is determined, it seems that there's no pattern there.
Afterwards the crew talk about the ethics behind the creation of soldiers for specific wars, and how several of them have had reported mystical experiences over the years, when the lights turn off again and more crew disappear.

Amongst the newly vanished was Cyclonus, but his Great Sword was left behind, Nightbeat starts to examine why it was left when he sees a giant human eye behind him. Ultra Magnus rescales his holo-avatar to a smaller size and reports that everyone else on the Leading Light (which would include Rodimus) and all the other shuttles have vanished. Tailgate looks out the window and can't see the Leading Light, leading Magnus to realize that he's vanished too, shortly followed by his avatar.

Nightbeat has Ratchet quickly write down all the information he has on all the crew on the Rodpod. to see if there's any helpful information. After finishing, the lights go out, and more crew are gone. When Ratchet leaves however he leaves his hands behind, after which Riptide reveals that he wasn't on the Lost Light before Dark Cybertron, he was SUPPOSED to be on the ship, but was knocked out in a bar fight with the Lost Light's original owners when he confronted them after learning they had a Sparkeater trapped on the ship, and that they are Mortilus worshippers.

This final piece of information solves the mystery for Nightbeat. Everyone who has vanished was a member of the original Lost Light Crew after it's purchase, and anything external added to them (like the new hands for Ratchet or Cyclonus' sword) were left behind too. Megatron points out that Nightbeat has failed as he solved the mystery too late to save anyone.
Before long the ship arrives around Ofsted XVII, where Nautica sees the wreckage of the Lost Light in orbit of the planet!!

Notes
  • This issue is essentially a bottle episode, often used in TV series' to save money on actors or set pieces etc. In a comic though it doesn't really save money at all.
  • It's revealed here that the Lost Light was purchased by Drift, Pipes and Riptide, and that they renamed it before launch (despite that being VERY unlucky in nautical traditions). This could explain some of the crew's problems of late! (Incidentally all three purchasers had a bad time in particular, Drift was exiled, Riptide was left behind, and Pipes was violently murdered)
  • Chromedome and Rewind are shown to be amongst the Festival goers in the opening scenes, possibly indicating that it is a romantic ceremony as well as a seemingly memorial one (based on the name, and the floating lanterns)
  • Nautica's Brainstorm worshipping was hinted at in the recent issues, where she even claims that Perceptor is inferior to him. However what is new here, is that Nautica seems to actually respect Megatron as a leader (most likely due to her being from another planet)
  • Nautica believes that the Lost Light's engines are what is making the ship disappear, as they have proven themselves to be impossible, thus they are becoming that!
  • Nautica is shown using a pair of blasters on the front cover during the Mexican standoff, despite being revealed in Windblade #3 that people from Caminus do not believe in using ranged weapons (in the issue itself she uses her wrench, but it's still note-worthy)
  • Several character's Forged/Constructed Cold statuses are revealed in this issue, but Megatron refuses to reveal his status (though since he's supposedly a Point One Percenter, he is likely Forged.
  • It's revealed that Nova Prime had a stockpile of sparks from his Matrix syphoning project, which were found later on, to be used to create new troops for major battles.
  • It's likely that the blackout on the Lost Light during Megatron's therapy session was what made the Pyrobots disappear (likely naming them as original crew members then)
  • Megatron remembers Verity's appearance, despite their only real interaction being a brief glimpse when she wandered into the Decepticon's original Earth base and found him them. He has a good memory!
  • Nightbeat's obsession with solving a mystery was shown in this issue to be more important to him than saving people.
  • Hoist mentions his old friend "Scattergun". This was also the name of one of Chromedome's past Conjunx Endurae. As shown in this series though, some characters do just happen to have the same names as each other.
  • Ammo is noted as being a Monoformer in this issue.

Plot
Six months ago, Megatron has Ultra Magnus begin his declaration, rescinding his guilty plea, when suddenly the Decepticons who were being held on the Lost Light break out and rush the stadium, intending to rescue Megatron. However Megatron refuses to be rescued, proving his intent to see the trial through. Afterwards the trial is forced to have a recess. During the recess Magnus explains that since the trial is being held on Luna-2 and not Cybertron, Megatron has the right to seek an audience with the Knights of Cybertron themselves to resolve the trial (due to an ancient law), which of course angers Starscream and Prowl, but the others think about what would work out best in the public's eyes.
Optimus visits Megatron in his cell, and confronts him on insisting on the trial being on Luna-2, due to the stadium being big enough for all his victims to gather in, and Megatron confirms that he was holding the Knight's as a back-up plan, as he now wants to be remembered as more than just a tyrant when he is executed (as he believes will happen). Optimus agrees to let him join the Lost Light on their quest on the condition that he reads a statement that Optimus has prepared in front of the crowd in the trial.

Megatron is brought back to the trial, where he reads off Optimus' message, where he disbands the Decepticons, and publicly renounces them, and urges all other Decepticons to do the same. Afterwards Optimus thanks Megatron, and allows him to join the Lost Light, after he leaves Megatron puts his head in his hands, seemingly distraught.

Nearby, Rodimus is showing off the new Rodpod the crew built for him (due to the old one blowing up) and Rodimus is told the result and fallout of the trial. Rodimus reveals that he has the list of people who voted against him, and shows Ratchet. He says he won't do anything about it as he wants to change his ways. Ratchet leaves, but tells him the list is fake, as HIS name wasn't on it.

In the present day, Megatron has called off today's Knights of Cybertron education class due to the issue with Rodimus' corpse suddenly appearing. Ratchet has First Aid perform an autopsy on Rodimus' body to verify the identity and cause of death, whilst Magnus calls in Rodimus himself...
Rodimus is understandably upset to come face to face with his own corpse, and argues with Megatron over their shared captaincy again, and about how Rodimus has been sulking since they took off from Cybertron.

Rodimus calls on a team of specialists to help identify the body further. First Aid confirms that this IS Rodimus due to the age of the innermost energon, but a little older. Chromedome confirms it by reading his mind and seeing his major life events. Nautica identifies the coffin as being Spectralist in design, which Rodimus recognizes as Drift's religion. They also determine that his cause of death was a hack-job of a shadowplay.
The group determine that at some point Rodimus reunites with Drift, is killed and is somehow sent back in time. This leads the group to discuss pre-determined futures and how they can alter them. During which Rodimus reveals he removed the crisis vote numbers from his hand, just as the wall behind his vanishes.
At Swerve's Bar, Tailgate is telling the story of how he beat Tyrest again, when Getaway comes in and gives him way more attention than what can be comfortable. During their moment, the alarms sound off.

The Lost Light is quickly vanishing, and the crew is evacuated in the shuttles. Rodimus, Megatron and several others leave via the Rodpod. Rodimus and Megatron continue to argue as the ship leaves, until Magnus points out that the entire ship is now gone!!

Notes
  • Ultra Magnus uses a giant hammer like his Prime and Animated counterparts
  • Bluestreak collected Earth movies during his time there
  • Whirl's avatar is able to braid her hair, guess the hair design has improved a lot after all!
  • Rodimus is revealed to be still on the Lost Light AND still in command, just a shared command with Megatron now as part of his release conditions.
  • Megatron's dislike or fear of Mnemosurgery is shown again here when he winces at Chromedome's work on the Rodimus corpse
  • Yeah...Getaway is acting a bit like a creepy sexual Predator this issue...let's see how this plays out before jumping to conditions though...
  • This also gives a potential new context to his "Bomping" where it's implied he kisses Tailgate here whilst saying it.
  • The list Atomizer gave to Rodimus is fake, but Rodimus still read it.
  • The fuel Megatron has to take, and that Trailcutter accidentally took, is a power dampening fuel that makes him weaker, as part of his parole.
  • To summarize Megatron's current situation: he hasn't been declared innocent, but he has to go with the Lost Light to find the Knights of Cybertron so THEY can judge his crimes. His position as (co) captain is so that he can't hide, as will be watched by the crew at all times.
  • Someone who looks an awful lot like the Matrix Thief from Remain in Light, with some beast mode kibble is shown on the Lost Light in the scene where the bar is vanishing.

Plot
Windblade and her gang fight off against the Terrorcons and manage to cause a lot of damage to their enemies, until Starscream and his new secret police arrive and arrest them for their "crimes".

The group are put in jail, except for Chromia, who escaped, and Windblade who is sent to a torture chamber for an interrogation. Starscream tries to convince the others that Windblade is the bad guy here, as she is an alien who cares nothing for Cybertron, but the jailed guys don't seem to be buying it.
Rattrap's interrogation of Windblade isn't going well, as she isn't admitting to betraying Cybertron, and she accuses Starscream of being responsible for the explosions in the city recently, which shocks him, as he believes it's her. He has her sent to the cell with the others.

Windblade tells Blurr what she just discovered when Chromia bursts into the jail with the rest of Blurr's regular patrons and rescues the jailed guys.
Windblade and Chromia start to race off towards Metroplex to discover who is actually involved in these problems, not knowing that whoever it is has completed the power transfer, and has opened a space bridge....

Notes
  • Windblade seems surprized tat Cutthroat can fly in his alternate mode, this could mean that aerial modes are rare on Caminus
  • It's revealed here that the people of Caminus do not use ranged weapons (like guns etc) as they find them wasteful, explaining Chromia and Windbblade's axe and sword.
  • It's shown here, that despite Starscream being responsible for then mining operation, he wasn't involved in the bombings or power outages, and seemed to believe that Windblade was responsible this whole time!
  • The power outages are revealed to be due to Metroplex opening a space bridge inside himself for someone to use.
