IDW - Clue Candlestick #1

Story/Art/Lettered by: Dash Shaw
Production Design by: Neil Uyetake
Assistant Edits by: Megan Brown
Edits by: David Hedgecock
Plot
Professor Plum wakes up from a strange nightmare of a mysterious woman whistling through his window, when he hears a door bell ringing.
The postman brings Plum his usual mail of correspondence, coupons, and a parcel from his old friend Mr Boddy, which intrigues him, due to it being in code. He manages to decode the message, and learns that Boddy feels threatened by someone and wants to offer some of his old friends a part of his prized collection of antique murder weapons.
On the night of August 3rd, Plum heads to Boddy's manor, where he recovers a key for him from a plum coloured stone piece and joins the rest of the guests at dinner.
There, he meets Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Mr Green and Mrs Peacock, as well as Mr Boddy's chef and housekeeper, Mrs White.

Whilst beginning their meal Boddy refuses to explain his reasons for believing he is due to die soon, and he implies that everyone is likely to die at any moment. This leads to Mustard agreeing, due to his developing a paranoia, following his time in the military, that everyone could be out to get him for his actions during the war, which has led to him not trusting anyone.
Mrs White brings out the trunk of the prized weapons, when he sees the candlestick and freaks out that it has intent of murder within it, when suddenly Mustard is shot by an unseen shooter and dies.
Green is quick to accuse Plum, who was sitting closest to the pistol that was in the trunk, and is now on the table, but no one saw due to the lights going out. Peacock points out that the doors were open, so someone could have shot him from the hallway and ran off.
Accusations start to fly around, whilst White proceeds to phone for the police. The group soon decide that there was probably another person in the house, who shot Mustard and split up into small groups to try and find the killer, or at least some clues. Boddy and Scarlett take Mustard's body to the kitchen to keep it cold in the cooler, whulst Peacock and Green search one side of the house, and Plum and White take the other side.
On their way to the Billiard room, Plum notices that Boddy has a lot of paintings of Scarlett in various styles, and appears to have an obsession with him, but also asks White about where she got the knife of Jack the Ripper for Boddy's collection. She explains that her former husband proposed to her with the knife and she later gave it to Boddy. However Plum noticed that the knife in the collection wasn't old at all, so she admits that she lied to Boddy about it being Jack the Rippers, but only because she wanted to make him happy, since he was in a depression spiral following his wife's death, and he loves historical weapons.
White suddenly gets an idea, and goes outside alone to check uinder the stone pieces outside, only to find Mrs Peacock's key was never taken, before being approached by someone from behind....

Whilst White is checking the keys Boddy and Scarlett are in the conservatory, when Boddy is struck by someone with the lead pipe, killing him instantly, Scarlett screams, bringing everyone to the room, bar White and they find her with the dead Boddy. They accuse her of the murder, but she says that she didn't kill him, she didn't love him enough to kill him...

Notes
  • This story is NOT a sequel to the earlier IDW Clue series, or at least there's no apparent connection so far.
  • This issue includes an article on how Cluedo/Clue is a game about murder by Tim Hodler, used for recreational purposes..it's an interesting read!
  • We aren't outright given any information on the location and date of this story, but from the letter sent to Plum at the start, we know he lives in London, implying this may be set in the UK, much like the original game.
  • Due to the stamp being noted as from 1940, and only a collector having it, we can assume that this is set in a relatively modern age, but with Mustard seeming to be a pretty openly gay military man, we can assume it's from the past decade or so.
  • The date given for the night of the main story, August 3rd, is a mystery to me, I can't find any connection to Clue/Cluedo and that date anywhere. Please tell me if you know the connection! Thanks!
  • The main characters in this series are mostly based on the original design for the characters in the game (Here's a reference pic from Wikipedia of them) with Green being pretty much untouched. Mustard and White look the same, but a bit younger than their game counterparts, and Scarlett is more pronounced as Asian. Plum and Peacock are completely different though.
  • The series uses Mr Boddy as the host, as he was in the American version of the game, Clue, where in the UK versions he would be Dr Black
  • All of the usual murder weapons in the game are revealed here to be gifts from the six usual suspects, and were originally, supposedly, connected to famous deaths and killers.
  • The rope hanged Calico Jack, and was authenticated by Plum. The lead pipe was used to kill Gallienus and was given by Mustard (though he was actually stabbed...). The pistol was used to assassinate President Garfield and was gifted by Green. The wrench was used to fix Albert Camus' car, who later died in a car crash, and was given by Scarlett. The knife supposedly belonged to Jack the Ripper by White. And the candlestick was just an item that fascinated him, and was given by Peacock after her husband's premature death.
  • The stone pieces in the garden where people's keys were hidden are based on the game pieces from the original game
  • Mustard reveals that his force from the military took on code names based on condiments upon returning to civilian lives
  • Any time there's a "Kra-boom" sound effect, it seems to be based on what would normally be a player action in the game, such as an accusation, deduction, movement, getting ideas etc. This implies that this scenario is actually happening in an actual game being played by an unseen character.
  • In a stark inversion of normal events, the murder that begins this story is Colonel Mustard, and not Mr Boddy! (Though Boddy dies at the end of the issue regardless)
  • After a character is confirmed dead, they appear in heaven with Saint Peter..this makes my job of figuring out if someone did die or not SO MUCH EASIER!!!
  • The map of the manor is the traditional game board to the actual game
  • Given the evidence so far, it appears that Peacock is probably the killer. She is mentioned by Green to have withheld some information, and her key was still under her stone piece, so she shouldn't have access to the house. Someone could have replaced their key with Peacock's to incriminate her, but it seems unlikely. Also, her gift to Boddy was the Candlestick, which is what set off Mustard's rant that led to his murder, it is also the only item in the set that was not mentioned in connection with a famous death, but with Mr Peacock's instead. Also, given the characters available, Peacock best fits the mysterious woman in Plum's opening nightmare, could this have been a warning? She's also apparently a vegan, so there's another red flag! :)
  • The back page features a set of cut-out custom Cluedo character cards, and a Candlestick weapon card, with the promise of more to come in future comics. Since there are nine loactions in the map shown in the comic, and five more weapons, that makes fourteen more cards, perfect for seven an issue (assuming this is indeed a three part series)

IDW - Transformers (2019) #5

Title: End: The World In Your Eyes
Written by: Brian Ruckley
Art by: Anna Malkova, Angel Hernandez & Sara Pitre-Durocher
Colours by: Joana LaFuente
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editors: David Mariotte & Tom Waltz
Plot
Megatron gives another livestreamed speech about how the Cybertronian race is being stunted, which Soundwave estimates is being reached by over a hundred thousand people by the end of the cycle.
Elsewhere, Chromia receives a report from Sideswipe telling her that nearly two hundred Cybertronians have gone missing since Brainstorm died.
Prowl, in his office talks to his pet and realizes that he shouldn't be trying to find the Voin himself, but the people it was dealing with, so he can find the scavenger...

Elsewhere still, Rubble finishes another day of work experience with Wheeljack, when he gets a message from Bumblebee saying that he can't take him to see the Moon that day, as they had planned, but promises to do so another day.
Wheeljack reassures him that Bee must be really busy to abandon him like this, which Rubble seems to accept, and so he starts to walk home by himself...
Rubble heads through the Xeno-quarter on his way home, where he tries to remember all the names of the alien species, however he soon comes across a Voin Scavenger, who refers to him as "Small Cybertronian", just like the one he met the night Brainstorm died. He realizes that it must be the same one, and chases after him.
He soon loses the Voin, and plans to give up his search, until he sees one of his enslaved organices running away screaming, he looks where he came from and finds Quake with the seemingly dead Voin in his hands....

Bee enters an Energon mine, where he was due to meet with Elita-1, but instead Senator Soundwave appears instead, and plants a device into the ground.
Soundwave reveals that he is there to determine if Bee is really telling the truth in his desire to join the Ascenticon Guard, and outright says that he doesn't trust him, due to his security force past, and friendship with Autobots. Bee explains that he wants to make the world better for himself and his new protégé and believes the Autobots won't be able to give them that.
Soundwave explains that the device is an electromagnetic suppressor, meant to drown out communications and allow their conversation to go unheard by anyone...

Quake notices Rubble and deems him a spy, and gives chase, Rubble tries to call Bee for help, but can't get through to him, he does accidentally get ahold of Prowl though, and says he found the Voin, but that someone has killed him, Rubble is soon, unfortunately found and pummeled by the much larger and blood-thirsty Ascenticon, as Prowl listened on....

As things go black, Rubble remembers his earlier thoughts about how Bumblebee was wrong about Cybertron being a peaceful world....

Notes
  • Sorry this review is so late, my comic supplier forgot to mention that they were going on a trip whilst this was being released, so I had to reorder a copy earlier this week from somewhere else.
  • Despite all the characters on the front cover of this issue, only three of them actually appear in the comic itself (and two of those are only for one page each!)
  • I rearranged some scenes in this review to make the story recap flow better, since they skip between plot points VERY frequently this issue.
  • This comic's art duties are divided up thusly: Malkova does the three one-page plot lines at the start of the issue, Hernandez deals with the Rubble story once again, and Pitre-Durocher deals with the Bumblebee plot line.
  • This issue seemingly ends the first story-arc of the series, unless there is an epilogue next issue (otherwise the "end" in the title doesn't make too much sense)
  • Megatron's dialogue confirms that Nominus was indeed a past Prime, and that he was responsible for the end of expansion (colonies etc) and the use of weaponry, which is most likely a part of the Nominus Edict mentioned throughout the series.
  • Sideswipe reports that nearly two hundred Cybertronians have gone missing, in a previous issue we learned that they couldn't find a lot of the higher ups from the Rise....hmmmm.....
  • Prowl's pet pteranodon looks quite like an organic version of the Battle Master Pteraxadon, could this be a pre-cursor to him? Or maybe he later cyberforms this cute critter into a machine?
  • The green aliens that Rubble greets on his way home look sort of like the A'ovans from the Titan comics, considering he mentions having to pass it on his way home, we can assume these are indeed A'ovans
  • I doubt that Bumblebee is really interested in joining the Ascenticon Guard, he is most likely joining them to go undercover for the Senate.
  • Bee also reveals that he was expelled from the security force, wonder what happened there!
  • Bee seems to imply that the Autobots are a political party (with the mention of voting for them) rather than just a faction like in the past. Is this a political drama in disguise?!
  • Bumblebee theorizes that Soundwave's electromagnetic suppressor uses subsonics. We haven't really dealt with those since Steeljaw used them in RID2015...is Steeljaw coming back/being transplanted to this series?
  • This issue shoes Quake, in heavy shadows looking mostly blue, just like the ghost hanging with Cyclonus said last issue...we may have found our killer here!
  • Well...to be fair, we didn't see him killing the Voin in this issue, he may have just found the body...then went after Rubble to try and seemingly kill him right afterwards...it's possible!!
  • Chromia mentioned that she linked her's and Prowl's communicators to Rubble's in case he needs help 2 issues ago.
  • The last page of the comic features most of Rubble's opening monologue from issue 2 of the series
  • So, this could be interesting! If, after showcasing Rubble and saying how great he is, they just kill him off by the end of the first story arc, then IDW are taking a leaf out of Transformers: Prime's book, with how they dealt with Cliffjumper. I love it!

Sig Pub - Transformers #43

Notes
  • This month's screen-cap comic is of the episode "Maccadam's"...we're getting close to the finale now huh?
  • In the comic Windblade refers to Cybertron as "Cyberverse"...this made me a little angry...
  • Despite it being a major part of the story in the episode itself, the screencaps selected only show Deadlock properly in one frame
  • The six page Bumblebee special is just six pages of puzzles
  • More than likely, the reason there's so much Bumblebee Movie stuff in this issue is because the DVD/Blu Ray is released this month in the UK.
  • Very weirdly, the stock image on the cover of this issue of Ratchet appears to be the only one available to the staff of the magazine, as it re-appears at least four times in the magazine itself.
  • The free gifts this month are a Ratchet figure, another pack of the fun fact cards, a Bumblebee Movie poster and a bunch of Bumblebee stickers.
  • The sticker sheet seems to use an earlier version of Bumblebee's character model from the final design in some of the pictures, as it features his door wings that were omitted from the final piece.
  • Also, one of the stickers refers to Bee as "N.B.E.2.", his designation by Sector Seven from the pre-Bumblebee Movie continuity (which has been confirmed to be a new continuity now!) So either this sheet was designed a while back, or they made an oopsie.

IDW - Transformers (2019) #4

Title: The World In Your Eyes, Part Four
Written by: Brian Ruckley
Art by: Sara Pitre-Durocher, Angel Hernandez & Andrew Griffith
Colours by: Joana LaFuente & Josh Burcham
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editors: David Mariotte & Tom Waltz
Plot
Windblade, Chromia and Geomotus investigate the area around the Transmission Station, where Geomotus notices that the land has been disturbed lately, but isn't sure if it was natural, or caused by a device. Windblade sees someone nearby, and Chromia recognizes him as Cyclonus, she sends Windblade after him.
Windblade pounces on Cyclonus, and Chromia knocks him over too, and they convinces him that they just want to talk. Cyclonus confirms that he saw Brainstorm arrive a while ago, but saw nothing else. Chromia orders him to come to Iacon to discuss this properly, but he's stand-offish about it. After they leave, Cyclonus talks with the ghosts from his past, and they ask him why he didn't mention the other bot who was with Brainstorm before his death...

Elsewhere, Rubble and Bumblebee join a large crowd in welcoming another new Cybertronian into the world, which is unprecedented due to the closeness to Rubble's own forging, and the proximity to Brainstorm's death.
They watch as the new female Cybertronian is introduced to Arcee, her mentor and Rubble reminisces on his few memories of his own first day.
The two of them leave after the ceremony, but Bee comes across an Autobot officer and a Rise member arguing about the Rise being suspected of killing Brainstorm, and Bee breaks it apart. Prowl soon arrives and is clearly stressed out from the investigation, even dismissing Rubble's offers to help identify the Voin Scavenger who may have been involved due to him seeing it before, and he sends them on their way.
Bee says goodbye to Rubble on his way home again, as he is going to attend Brainstorm's funeral that night, but also apologizes for being a bit flaky as a mentor recently.

Later, several high ranking individuals, as well as friends and cohorts attend the funeral for Brainstorm, which is being presided over by a Revertionist, despite Brainstorm's atheism. Orion explains that this was to appease them, as the council were worried that they may join the Ascenticons if they weren't allowed this high profile ceremony.
Megatron gets into a short argument with Ironhide about not using the funeral to try and discuss politics, after Orion asks Megatron to get Termagax to denounce the recent riots and violence by Megatron's faction.
As Brainstorm's body is placed into a furnace for incineration, all in attendance are silent and mourn for their fallen friend....

Notes
  • The art duties this issue have been shifted around a bit. Hernandez is still doing the Rubble story-line, but Sara Pitre-Durocher (Till All Are One) provides the art for the opening scenes, and Andrew Griffith (Robots in Disguise 2012) does the final scene.
  • After his brief cameo last issue, we see Cyclonus is full here, and he is indeed based on his Combiner Wars counterpart, but with sharper nails to match his MTMTE counterpart.
  • The ghosts we see with Cyclonus are most likely victims of the war with the Threefold Spark that was mentioned last issue.
  • The ghosts mention a blue-ish bot that was with Brainstorm before he died, this is clearly trying to hint towards Rubble being the killer, but there are other blue/blue-ish bots in the series so far
  • The building that the new Cybertronians come out of and are shown off is referred to as "the Pyramid"....it doesn't really look like a Pyramid to me...
  • Greenlight is clearly using her upcoming Siege toy design (you can tell from the backpack) but Arcee is too far away and lacks enough detail to identify her body design, but I would assume she is based on either her Thrilling Thirty design or the new one made for the Synergy one shot.
  • Judging from the dialogue and their proximity it is assumed that Arcee and Greenlight are in a relationship.
  • Rubble comments that his first thoughts about Bee was that he was very yellow, which Bee seems to be a bit offended by. Whilst he was likely referring to his colour scheme, being "yellow" is often a euphemism for cowardice...perhaps this is a hint to why he left the security forces?
  • With Orion Pax meeting the new Cybertronian are two larger robots, whom we can assume are Senators, maybe my thoughts on older Cybertronians just being larger is true after all?
  • This issue confirms that the Voin Scavengers are just the brain module thing, with the organic creatures being enslaved creatures.
  • Interestingly, the dialogue suggests that Termagax is still alive, but in seclusion somewhere, so I guess she wasn't the prisoner Froid was forbidden from meeting after all!
  • Perceptor is shown using a classic looking design, rather than his now usual sniper redesign...I'm kind of glad about this reversion!
  • Ratchet makes a cameo showing his new Siege toyline deign off as well :)
