DW - Generation One Volume 1

Plot
Somewhere in the Arctic, Lazaras and his team find the body of Soundwave in the ice, and begin excavating him and his fellow Transformers, who crashed after the explosion of the Ark II in 1999
Later, in South America some rebels are killed by a giant mysterious being. Later, in Ohio, Spike wakes up and gets ready for work when he's visited by General Hallo and his team about the attack, as SPike had personal contact with the Transformers in the past, and they know that Megatron was the one who attacked the rebel base
Lazaras and his team return to the Northwestern Territories in Canada with some more clients and show them the captured Transformers, including Megatron. Spike is taken to the Pentagon where he is shown the footage of Megatron, showing that at least he survived the explosion of the Ark II. In Canada again Megatron starts to wake up, despite being thought to be under Lazarus' control. Spike is taken to a facility, where he is shown the currently inert body of Optimus Prime in storage, after being found in the Arctic Ocean before.

Spike has them open Optimus' chest panels, revealing the empty Matrix, Spike takes out a piece of the Matrix that Optimus gave him back in 1999, and places it inside the Matrix's shell.
In the Arctic some oil workers are attacked by some Transformers (Autobot and Decepticon), and the fight is monitored by Laserbeak, whom is sending the footage back to Lazarus to show his clients, as a demonstration of his hardware's capabilities. The bidders are excited, especially when Megatron is shown as well...until Megatron reveals that he isn't under Lazarus' control, and proceeds to attack the audience and takes them all, including Lazarus captive.
Optimus, Spike and Hallo's team are taken to the Arctic, where Optimus unleashes the power of the Matrix and revives the Autobots who remained in the ice and water.
Nearby an aircraft returns to Lazarus' base, but is attacked by Megatron.

Optimus and the others are taken to the site of the battle where he learns of the Autobots being involved as well. Hallo's team pick up word of the enemy base and an explosion in the area, which Optimus asks for the location of (loudly).
The Decepticons have been freed from their mind control and they start playing the with still inert Autobots' bodies, before  heading to a room where Megatron has set off a device (powered by some Autobot's energy reserves) and has the human staff restrained. Soundwave actvates the device, which starts to seep out a cyberforming compound, which slowly converts the organic matter in the area into Cybertronian metals. The Decepticons leave when Laserbeak reports that the Autobots are on the way.
The Autobots arrive at the base and the Decepticons engage them in battle, after Optimus fails to stop the cyberforming compound. Grimlock reveals that he's now joined the Decepticons, so he's on the winning side now. During the battle, Hallo orders a nuclear drop on the battlesite to stop the compound from spreading, and to also kill the Transformers too.
Hallo and his team return to the Pentagon, where they place Spike under arrest. Hallo has his team delete all records of this mission to finish off the Transformers, as it seems to have failed, since the nuclear explosion was cyberformed and turned into a dome instead.

Optimus and the Autobots break free of the nuclear dome and learn that the Decepticons are already gone. The Autobots investigate inside the base and find their de-energized allies and start work on repairing them, and also find the dead statue-like humans and realize how dangerous this is now. Ironhide wakes up faintly and tells Optimus that Megatron told him to send him a message to go to San Francisco, which is where the Decepticons suddenly appear and begin attacking.
Optimus flies on Superion's back to get to the city before it's too late. Upon arriving Superion takes on Devastator and sends him into the harbour. Optimus and some other Autobots take on the Decepticons, Superion is separated by a choice shot from Starscream. In Canada again Wheeljack and the others are trying to work out how to stop the cyberforming, whilst in San Francisco Devastator rises up again, grasping an Aerialbot in his hand.

At the Pentagon Spike recieves a note under his door telling him to be ready at 3 o'clock. In Canada, the Autobots from the cyberformed base roll out to a forest and scare off some humans to keep them away from the danger. The team start deploying a compound of their own that should stop the virus in the Decepticon's compound from spreading any further. in the city again, Devastator is smashing through and defeating the Autobots one by one, but is ultimately defeated by Optimus who sends him falling through the water.
At the Pentagon, Spike is freed by a janitor, who's brother worked with Lazarus and Hallo to sabotage the Ark II in the past, SPike is angry with the janitor, attacks him and takes his card key to use himself (as the explosion is what killed his father). In Canada the military arrive and treat the Autobots as a hostile force.
In San Francisco the Autobots have been captured, and Megatron taunts Optimus by pointing out how fast the humans turned against him, whilst Hallo sets off a nuclear missile towards San Francisco.

The President and Defense Minister arrive at the Pentagon, but too late to stop Hallow from launching the missile. In Canada the Autobots try to protect the human military from the now approaching Cyberforming wave, but are attacked as well.
In the city the humans start to help out the Autobots (such as by them launching vehicles from broken bridges at the Decepticons). Optimus frees the other Autobots and they rejoin the battle.
At the Pentagon, Spike walks into the control room, and Hallo hold shim at gun point to stop him from stopping the missile. In Canada the Autobots keep trying to protect the humans, and in the Pentagon Hallo is subdued by the staff.
In the city Soundwave detects the incoming missile and warns Megatron, who gloats at Optimus again at this action. Superion takes off to intercept the missile, whilst in Canada Wheeljack rushes a satellite dish, which he uses to power his own compound and cancel out the cyberforming wave. The nuke is destroyed over the ocean, and Superion is killed, sinking into the water.
The Autobots have saved the day in all their battlefields and everyone is happy. The Decepticons have left the city, and Grimlock leaves with them.

A short time later in the Gulf of Alaska some sailors find a large Autobot ship, and Optimus has a vision of it as well....

Notes
  • This is the start of the ill-fated Dreamwave G1 storyline
  • I wont mention the artwork here...other than to say it's atrocious by ANY standards
  • The character models in this story are using the classic G1 cartoon designs on the whole, although the designs seem to fluctuate in various places
  • Megatron's hold over Grimlock is revealed in Volume 2 to be that he has the other Dinobots hostage
  • Red Alert is seen amongst the Autobots on Earth (whilst Sideswipe is known to be elsewhere as well, so he's not just a mis-coloured character). This is in contradiction to later stories showing him on Cybertron still
  • It reeeeeaaaaaaaally looks like Wheeljack dies in this story, but he's later totally fine!
  • The Volume 2 preview here doesn't really fit in with the events of Volume 2, as the large Autobot ship was replaced with an escape pod of some sort, and it also isn't under water. Optimus' pain can be explained away as him getting a vision from the Matrix or something though.
  • This story includes a newspaper article that sheds light on what happened before this story on Earth.
  • Shrapnel and Blitzwing are shown in the flashback scenes as the Decepticon captives on Earth, however Shrapnel isn't even known of in this time period it seems, and Blitzwing is on Cybertron.
