IDW - Transformers: Windblade #7

Title: The Will of the Few
Written by: Mairghread Scott
Art by: Corin Howell
Colours by: Thomas Deer with John-Paul Bove
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editor: John Barber
Plot
Windblade and Starscream return to Cybertron from Eukaris, having secured their place on the Council of Worlds, but Windblade is furious at Starscream for having killed Chela, the Titan. Starscream dismisses her complaints due to him having saved her life, and having secured Eukaris for them. Chromia comforts Windblade over her guilt over "helping" with Chela's death, and they decide to see Metroplex and ask about the last located Colony World they found.
Windblade tells Metroplex about Chela's death, and he forgives her for her part in it, as he knew Chela would never concede to her and Starscream. The Titan then gives Windblade information about the last colony, formed from the Titan Tempo, who was carrying philosophers, and tried to find some new truth to bring back home...
The next day, Starscream and Windblade head to Tempo.

On the hull of Tempo, two members of the crew are guarding the Space Bridge, in case of more Cybertronians coming through, when suddenly it activates, the guards call for back-up. Starscream and Windblade walk through the portal and are confronted by a small army, led by Strika, who don't want Cybertronians on their ship. After a very brief battle, Elita One appears and greets the two newcomers, agreeing to meet with them in her throne room, and explains that their last encounter with Cybertronians was violent.

Going through the ship, Elita explains that the ship is now called Carcer, not Tempo, and tells the newcomers that their goal changed from knowledge to a more militaristic one, but they hold truth as their highest law. She also explains that the ship has been being repaired over the years by using their dead crew members as spare parts, so they can mourn and remember the dead.
Starscream tries to appeal to Elita's war-like nature, by suggesting she adds her army to his, so they can protect and build up Cybertron some more, to maintain it's current peace.
Sadly for Starscream however, Obsidian and Elita reveal that they know Cybertron isn't "peaceful" as Obsidian saw the battle between Optimus Maximus and Devastator on their ship's hull during the Combiner Wars, and believes that Starscream is more likely to try and enslave her people rather than treat them as equals. Worst than that though, she believes he was lying just then, which is a capital offence on Carcer, and orders Strika to execute him.
Windblade steps in, and asks for her to give Starscream leniency for now, and she believes that all the colonies and Cybertron truly do need each other, as all of them have something that the others need, and they can only survive by working as one.

Elita One considers her options, and agrees that Carcer should join the Council of Worlds, and has a representative head to Cybertorn to check it out.
After returning to Cybertron, Windblade learns that Carcer IS NOT a nickname for Tempo, but is the name of another Titan, meaning that despite her words, Elita isn't telling the whole truth about her people. She decides to keep this information a secret for now though.

Two weeks later, Carcer's representatives, Strika and Obsidian sign their names to the charter, and the Council of Worlds is formed. The Combaticons watch the signing on a television, and get angry that Starscream is hiding the fact that Swindle and others were killed for this council to be formed, but they won't let him stay forgotten....

Notes
  • Wait...if Metroplex knew that Chela would be a problem for Windblade and Starscream last issue, then why didn't he warn Windblade?
  • Apparently Engex can be pronounced in different ways, like "tomato" and "potato"
  • It seems like most of the warrior members of the Carcer crew use female character models.
  • Strika's line of "I terminate!" is a reference to her activation code of "TERMINATE" when transforming in Beast Machines.
  • One of the silhouettes of the Carcer crew seems to be based on TFA Sentinel Prime (I won't put him in the character list because it's impossible to tell, but still!)
  • It's revealed that the ship's décor of dead body parts is just the past members of the crew being recycled as the ship is old. The throne that Elita One uses uses the previous commander's body...at least that's the story she's giving us...
  • Seriously, the front cover makes her look quite evil and murdery....
  • More than likely the Carcer crew invaded the Tempo, killed the crew and took their place, maybe using Tempo as repair parts for Carcer.
  • The Carcer crew also appear to have built-in arm cannons and other weapons, like the characters from the Prime cartoon.
  • Despite the previous decision for one representative per planet, as mentioned when Divisiun joined the council, there appears to be 2 reps per planet (except Caminus and Cybertron).
  • The Combaticons are reunited, minus the dead Swindle of course, but he is mentioned through graffiti...could this be due to the upcoming Combiner Wars Combaticons? Hmmm...
  • This is the last issue of the Windblade comic, but the story will continue in 2016 in the rebranded "Till all are one" comic series
  • Depending where this issues falls in continuity, Brawl may have stayed behind on Cybertron following him and Needlenose returning to recruit others to the Jupiter colony.
  • The signing scene appears to resemble a similar Pax Cybertronia signing shown in Dreamwave's unfinished Age of Wrath comic series...let's hope this isn't an omen.....

RID - Drift's Samurai Showdown

Plot
The Autobots are under attack by Decepticons in their scrapyard base...except they aren't....Bumblebee is testing his team with a Decepticon drill, and gets annoyed when Drift and his pupils don't even turn up. Drift turns up afterwards and comments on how the team can't work well together, and how he doesn't need one, as he has lasted for a long time on his own (ignoring his Mini-Cons). All of a sudden, Fixit alerts the team to a REAL Decepticon alert, and they go to get the information on it.
The Decepticon is under Crown City, so Grimlock has to stay behind, and Drift volunteers to remain as well after  learning who the Decepticon is (Forager, one of the Ronin). The Autobots quickly and easily manage to defeat Forager, and capture him, however when they return to the base, Forager reveals he was just faking being knocked out, and tries to escape...however he is again quickly put back to the stasis pod, but not before noticing Drift, and recognizing him as an old friend, leaving Drift to leave again, so as not to reveal his past to the team.

The next morning, the Autobots are trying to interrogate the Mini-Cons to find out Drift's secret, but they won't reveal anything. Russell takes over from the interrogation, by playing "tag" with the Mini-Cons and Sideswipe, making them a bit more relaxed, and they admit to not knowing his full history, but do reveal that he used to be named Deadlock, and was once a Decepticon before changing sides.
Bumblebee appears from behind them, outraged to learn this secret, he and Strongarm begin speculating that Drift might be a Decepticon spy, planning to work with Strongarm for his big plans, though Sideswipe points out that maybe Drift's Decepticon past is just in the past, like with Grimlock. Bee agrees to look into it further before making any judgements on his team-mate. Fixit then announces that multiple Decepticon signals have appeared.
Fixit can't identify the Decepticon signals as they appear to have scrambled their signals, but has located Drift driving towards them. The team are undecided on whether this means Drift is rendezvousing with his Decepticon allies, or heading to an ambush, so they go after him, they do however leave the Mini-Cons behind, just in case Drift is up to no good.

The Humans keep the Mini-Cons occupied whilst the Autobots race off to deal with Drift, one way or another when they find no Decepticons in the area they were detected, but some signal transmitters instead, giving fake signals, luring the team away from the base. Nearby however, two Decepticons have been watching the Autobots, and have collected images on them, which they use to create hologram disguises for themselves to use.
Soon, the fake Bumblebee and Grimlock return to the base, where they quickly capture Denny and Slipsteam and put them in a cage. Jetstorm and Russell manage to sneak away out of the scrapyard, and head the direction the Autobots went earlier, to try and intercept them.
Once gone, Fixit is forced to start releasing the Ronin captives, aka, just Forager, and he reveals that he saw Deadlock with the Autobots earlier when he was being frozen, despite him appearing to die back when they last saw him, they then decide to use an old holo image of Deadlock to their advantage later, in case the Autobots return.
The Autobots soon arrive, and fall for the Drift holograms, making them believe that Drift is in fact aligned with the Ronin still, and they are trapped inside some empty Stasis Cells.

In the woods, Jetstorm and Russell run into Drift, who they don't trust any more. Drift explains to them his back-story, where he was recruited by Megatron into the Decepticons when it was just a revolutionary, non-violent group, but it soon changed into a terrorist group. He was later badly injured in battle, but rescued by the Circle of Light. When the war reached the Circle as well. Drift became as Ronin, a group of Bounty Hunters, however on their last mission together, Foxtrot wanted to cause an explosion that would have killed the local lifeforms in the system, so Drift faked an explosion, and his death to save them. He then later joined the Autobots as Drift.
Drift suggests that the only way for them to rescue the others is to deceive the Ronin....

Drift, Jetstorm and Russell return to the scrapyard, where they meet with a fake Grimlock, whom Drift quickly identifies as Stilts. After a quick exchange, Drift "betrays" his comrades and captures them, taking them further into the base with Stilts, and puts them in the cage with Denny and Slipstream.
Foxtrot and the others are reluctant to trust Drift at first, but soon decide it's great to have the team all back together, and Foxtrot reveals his plan is to sell the Decepticon prisoners to the Autobots, and vice-versa to make a major profit. Drift and the Ronin leave to collect some Energon to help them power the locators, whilst the Mini-Cons and Humans begin to wonder if Drift is actually on their side or not...

The Ronin and Drift arrive at a factory in Crown City where they find a pile of Energon, left by the previous Decepticon occupants. Whilst there, a human security guard appears, and Drift pretends to kill him by causing a roof cave-in, but he purposely makes sure it misses the human.
The Ronin return to the base, and plan to "recycle" the Mini-Cons and Humans, when Drift starts to torment them by throwing a shuriken at the captives. However, unknown to the Ronin, Drift placed a message on the shuriken and slashed the bars, allowing them to escape, they head to the Stasis Cells, and release the Autobots.
The Autobots are ready to turn on Drift for his betrayal, but the Humans and Mini-Cons stop them, and explain what's happened. very soon, the Autobots attack the Ronin, and Drift reveals his true colours and turns on the Ronin as well, helping the Autobots to capture them all. Bumblebee and the others apologize for not trusting Drift, and he apologizes for not trusting them with his secret earlier, and everyone is happy...until no doubt someone else's dark past is uncovered...who bets Strongarm is a Predacon in disguise or something?

Notes
  • Drift's back-story and old name are based on his IDW counterpart.
  • Though unlike his IDW counterpart, THIS Drift was never really evil, or a killer...just confused at a younger age...
  • This story appears to be set just after Drift's joining of the team in the TV series
  • The Grimlock impression makes Stilts sound like G1 Grimlock rather than RID.

IDW - More Than Meets The Eye #44

Title: The Not Knowing
Written by: James Roberts
Art by: Hayato Sakamoto
Coordination by: Phase6
Colours by: Joana LaFuente
Letters by: Tom B. Long
Editor: John Barber
Plot
Rewind talks to Rodimus about the story of the Necrobot, whilst he is carrying his office desk down the corridor to see Magnus and Megatron. The two other parts of the ship's command are examining the bullet left by Agent 113, Megatron deduces that "Vos" was Agent 113, and learns that the DJD had found the Necrobot's planet.
Rewind and Chromdome want to find the Necrobot, but Rodimus refuses since it's in the wrong direction for Cyberutopia, revealing that he has a map, that's been being scribbled into his desk since the start of the journey, subconsciously. Rewind reveals to them that he wants to see him so he can get closure on Dominus Ambus, as does Chromedome too. Megatron agrees to the trip, much to Rodimus' annoyance.

On the way to the planet, Rewind and Minimus Ambus finally talk about Dominus, with Minimus outright saying that he felt him die, and he would KNOW if he was still alive somehow. He then also points out that sometimes it's better too not know something upsetting.
The Lost Light arrives at the planet, and finds it to be a beautiful and organic looking place, with beautiful blue flowers placed all over the place, and one life sign. They locate the Necrobot's home, and thousands of statues, several of which are empty.
The Rodpod lands next to his home, but he closes the door on them after seeing who was there. Nightbeat rushes after him, and tries to get his attention.
The remaining crew examine the strange flowers, and wonder what they're for,and figure out that the statues are of all the Cybertronian species, and the ones that have no active statue hologram (which Mainframe reveals are holograms btw) are those who have died. Nightbeat manages to get through to the Necrobot, and he lets him into his home for a talk.
Chromedome and Rewind have snuck off, and access the planet's database, and search for Dominus' entry. Rewind isn't sure if he wants to know, but in the end gives in, and starts the search...and it reveals that Dominus has been deactivated....

Inside the Necrobot's home, Nightbeat learns the Necrobot is just a normal, but old Cybertronian called Censere, who uses his advanced technology to keep tabs on the Cybertronian race, and uses a Quantum Drive to teleport to the dying/dead Cybertronians so he can record and respect their deaths. He started this after a friend of his' death went unrecorded for some time. All of this annoys Nightbeat, as he was hoping that the Necrobot would be proof of something MORE after their deaths, but instead he is just a normal guy. Censere reveals that he himself believes in the Afterspark, and just because HE is a normal Cybetronian, doesn't mean there isn't anything mystical out there.

Later on, the Lost Lighters reunite at the Rodpod, where Perceptor has analysed the flowers, and learns that they're artificial. Censere reveals that he has the flowers imbued with residual spark energy from the death Cybertronians, and he plants them on the planet around the statue of the Cybertronian who caused their death, whether by action, or inaction.
Rewind and Chromedome return, with Chromedome offering to erase the sad news from Rewind's head, but Nightbeat drags him away to a plaque honouring the missing Cybertronians, that Censere has had to mark down as dead, despite being unsure. He was shown the list as his own name was on it due to being missing in the Dead Universe, and shows them that Dominus is on the list!

The Autobots prepare to leave the planet, with Nightbeat asking Censere to reconsider his own rules, and use his medical skills to heal the dying if he finds them still alive, instead of not interfering. Megatron and Ravage have wandered off though, and found Megatron's on statue, with a magnificent field of flowers, representing his kills filling the entire field, with no end in sight....

Notes
  • This issue reveals the identity of the Necrobot, confirms his existence and abilities, and confirms outright that the names on his list earlier in the series were those of the Alternate Lost Light.
  • It's revealed that the original Vos, mentioned earlier in the series as having hooks for body parts was in fact Agent 113, and most likely is now dead....still no love for Punch :(
  • It's also revealed that Prowl started the "Agent 113" program...damn him!
  • Rodimus suggests that he should be called "The Chosen One" now. This was his title in the 80's G1 series too
  • It's revealed that the scribblings that Rodimus has been making since the start of the journey has been a map to Cyberutopia thanks to his affinity with Primus, also shown when a Titan used him to pass on his help message to the ship.
  • Rewind and Minimus Ambus/Ultra Magnus finally talk about their shared connection. Magnus' brother Dominus, Rewind's past Conjunx Endura. Though it's also revealed that Rewind HAS spoken to his alternate self about on on his old version of the ship.
  • The Rodpod doesn't have stealth mode, but Rodimus likes to pretend it does...
  • Megatron reveals to Ravage that whilst he does still intend to find the Knights of Cybertron, he's decided now to take his time, and not rush to his death, which is why he's allowing the trip to the Necrobot's panet.
  • This issue confirms that Dominus Ambus has been recorded as "deactivated"...though the Necrobot puts a spanner into that story point by having him on the "Missing in Action" list, as he couldn't find the body.
  • The Necrobot/Censere's cape is awesome....
  • Seriously I want one!
  • Nightbeat is revealed to have had an existential crisis following his confusing death in Spotlight Hardhead, an revival in the Dead Universe, and not witnessing the Afterspark in the meantime.
  • Censere reveals that back in the old days of Cybertron people were allowed to retrain for new careers, rather than being stuck in one role for life....Swerve and Whirl would have liked life back then I think!
  • As such, Censere is a trained census auditor and a forensic scientist, with both sets of skills being used for his role as the Necrobot.
  • So yeah...Megatron has killed a lot of guys huh?
  • You know, if they really cared, they could have looked up if Agent 113 is dead on the Necrobot's planet...I mean I guess at least Magnus or Rodimus would know his real name.
  • Though unconfirmed, Raptor and Scissorkick are likely Autobots as Rodimus recognizes them along with Ironhide and Xaaron.

IDW - Robots in Disguise Animated #2

Plot
In Crown City, the Decepticon Transit kidnaps a group of humans in his bus mode, and traps them inside. Luckily though, the Autobots soon intercept him, whilst Denny and Russell stop the other humans from seeing the robot battle by claiming the area is closed for renovations.
Transit goes on the run again, but is stopped by the Autobots again, which allows the trapped humans to escape. Denny explains Transit away as an experimental self-driving bus, which doesn't impress the other humans.

With the humans out of danger, the Autobots defeat Transit, and take him back to base.
Back at base, Fixit reports that he hasn't found any sign of Ultra Magnus and the others, when suddenly they appear in the base. The two teams greet each other, and Bumblebee reunites with his old team, but Ultra Magnus immediately asks for Bee's helping locating a Decepticon from the Alchemor, Clipshade.
The team briefly unfreeze some of the Decepticons to ask them about Clipshade, but don't get too much information. However they do get a name "Retrofit" who is a rookie recruit for the Cybercomrade Sect, and works for Clipshade. Since Retrofit looks like Strongarm, they decide to use her in disguise to find Clipshade.

Soon, "Retrofit" is walking through the Agave Canyon Testing Facility with Fixit as her "prisoner" when she is soon met by Clipshade, however Strongarm fails a test of Clipshade's and reveals her farce, turning the Decepticon against her.
Clipshade goes on the run, and the Autobots split up to flank him, and before long he is knocked out by the Autobots, leaving him unable to even use his shoulder cannon.
Magnus takes custody of Clipshade before Bee can, but refuses to tell Bee anything about the prisoner, or why they're there, although he does thank Team Bee for their help before leaving through a Space Bridge.

Later, the team are celebrating their success, but they do wonder why Clipshade never fired his weapon...
Elsewhere, Bumblebee is wandering the junkyard when he finds some carnival mirrors, and sees Optimus's reflection again, he tells him to trust his instincts over his distrust of his former teammate's motives.
Bee soon returns to the base, and asks the team to look into all data they have on Clipshade, and his history, so they can figure  out what Magnus wants with him.

Notes
  • Optimus and Bumblebee are using their current era bodies on the front cover of this comic, rather than their Beast Hunters bodies.
  • Why is no one commenting on the giant robots in the news footage of the Autobots?
  • Ultra Magnus appears to have had the Forge of Solus Prime repaired after it's destruction by Predaking. Most likely it is just aesthetic, and isn't a magical artefact of the Primes any more though.
  • Retrofit is a "repaint" of Strongarm, explaining how she can be disguised as her here...I wonder if this is a hint at a future toy?
  • Clipshade appears to know Arcee by name on sight. I wonder if they have a past?
  • One of the reflections Bumblebee gets from the carnival mirrors is of his Transformers: Animated counterpart.
  • From Bumblebee's dialogue, it looks like the previous issue was set 3 weeks before this one.
  • This is the first issue to not include a side-comic and/or a letter from the editor.
  • Despite their appearances on the cover, Wheeljack, Smokescreen and Ratchet are no where to be seen in the comic, nor are they mentioned.
  • Ultra Magnus' crew are still called "Team Prime" despite Optimus being long dead.

IDW - Windblade Volume 2 #6

Written by: Mairghread Scott

Editor: John Barber
Plot
One month ago, following the Combiner Wars, Tigatron and Airazor visit Blackarachnia, who acts as a prophet for Onyx Prime on Eukaris. They tell her about the combiners, and how they were clearly from Cybertron, indicating the planet may try to make contact soon.
One week ago, the heads of the four tribes of Eukaris meet up with Blackarachnia, Tigatron and Airazor near the Space Bridge and try to decide what to do about Cybertron. Suddenly Rattrap appears from the portal, planning to find something, but ends up having to talk to the beastformers about Cybertron.

Today, the representatives from Velocitron and Devisiun have arrived on Cybertron, and sign their entries into the Council of Worlds, along with Caminus and Cybertron. Windblade and Starscream plan to head to Eukaris the next day, together so neither can claim the other one "owns" that world's loyalty (since Windblade got Velocitron and Starscream secured Devisiun).
Rattrap gives Windblade the advice to lean on Blackarachnia and Cheetor if she wants to "win" that planet too.

The next morning, Windblade and Starscream arrive on Eukaris, where they are met by the beastformers, most are distrusting of the "standardformers" of Cybertron, but seem to accept Windblade, since she is Camien, and not Cybertronian. Windblade explains that the other colonies are starting to return to Cybertron now, so they can reunite the species, and share their cultures with one-another. Cheetor seems interested, but before anything else can happen, an earth-quake (impossible in this area of the planet) occurs, scaring everyone.
Chela, the Titan that populated Eukaris has awoken, and declares that the standardformers must be killed for their treatment of Onyx Prime's people in the past.
Starscream and Cheetor attack the Titan, whilst Windblade flies into his brain chamber to try and reason with the Titan. Chela however restrains her inside his head, and continues his attack. Unfortunately though, Starscream rushes in, and blasts the brain, instantly killing the Titan, rescuing Windblade, despite her tears over the fallen Titan.

In the aftermath, Windblade mourns for Chela's death, whilst Starscream and Blackarachnia start discussing the alliance. Blackarachnia decides to make Airazor and Tigatron Eukaris' representatives, as they belong to no tribe, meaning their votes won't benefit one tribe over the others.

Notes
  • Despite being prominent on the cover, Chromia isn't in the comic outside the "previously" section.
  • The first 2 pages are set right after the end of Combiner Wars, where we saw Tigatron and Airazor finding the damage caused by the Combiners.
  • Small inconsistency here: Despite Optimus Maximus and Devastator arriving and fighting on Eukaris during Combiner Wars, Chela didn't wake up, but he does the second Starscream and Windblade do...
  • Despite the others being based on their Beast Wars counterpart's appearances. Blackarachnia is based on her Transformers: Animated body.
  • It's revealed here that the colony that Starscream made contact with whilst Windblade was on Velocitron was Devisiun.
  • The people of Devisiun are based on various characters from the franchise who combine in pairs whilst in vehicle mode, such as the Jet Twins.
  • Apparently since the Devisiun Titan died, the denizens were altered to match their binary star system, making them all "twins"
  • Onyx Prime is the member of the 13 associated with Eukaris (aka the Beast Wars planet). This isn't shocking since he is named as the originator of beats form Transformers.
  • The Titan Chela is shown to have a phoenix-like robot mode, suitable for Onyx Prime's vessel huh?
  • The hatred of "standard-formers" by Chela and the others is most likely due to Galvatron's slaughter of their ancestors on Cybertron.
  • Airazor and Tigatron left their original tribes to be together, much like how in the Beast Wars cartoon they left the Maximal's team to explore the newly altered Earth, resulting in their being sent away by the Vok shortly afterwards.
  • Vanquish was seen earlier in Empire of Stone as a Decepticon, but here he is an unaligned, smaller robot. They are most likely different guys who happen to look the same, and have the same name.
