Plot
Ultra Magnus has been infested with Nanocons from a mission years ago, and so Brainstorm has shrunk down some of the Autobots to battle them from the inside before they can enter his brain and kill him, and then escape and kill the rest of the crew. The Nanocons start to drill through Magnus' mouth when Ratchet tells him to smile, which crushES the Nanocons, and humiliates Magnus (as he never smiles).
Later Magnus is walking down a hallway, and gets teased for his smiling before by several crew members. Elsewhere the crew are getting ready for a ceremony for Tailgate for becoming a probationary Autobot, Swerve is looking in the engine rooms for Red Alert when he sees Ore's body, and leaves him some innermost Energon, when suddenly Ore wakes up! (despite being dead and merged with the engines). Elsewhere, Rodimus is busy not getting ready for the ceremony (planning to wing it) when Drift decides to talk to him about his overuse of the "Til all are one" phrase and how people are starting to talk about it. Magnus walks in and complains about how the crew are mocking him, but Rodimus just explains that it's because they like him and they feel fine to just tease him now, unlike before, he also expresses his concerns about how they can't make contact with the Circle of Light, whose planet Theophany, they are approaching. Drift just dismisses it as them being on a radio silence for some reason.

Later at the ceremony Tailgate wants Rodimus to wait until Swerve gets there as he's his friend, but they can't wait, Jackpot is in the audience taking bets on how long it takes for Rodimus to say "Til all are one" (which Brainstorm wins with 5 seconds - though he bet 8 seconds). During the service Skids learns that some of the Off-Liners in Medibay have started waking up 10 minutes ago and seem to be trying to crush their heads. Rodimus starts to draw a temporary badge onto Tailgate's chest when he starts writing something on his chest instead, in Old Cybertronian, then Swerve calls Skids and tells him about Ore waking up, which worries Perceptor, as if he gets too worked up he could overload the engines, AND THEN The Galactic Council appear and start hailing the Lost Light.
The Council ship informs Rodimus that the Crystal City is deserted, which Drift won't believe. Magnus bargains for them to have just an hour on the surface to check for themselves, which the Council agrees to. Before Rodimus can arrange an away team however the Council teleport all those in the room with him away.
In the engine room Ore is worried, but Swerve tells him he was in a little accident, and is in Medibay with his optics off, and starts talking to him to calm him down. Ore mistakes Swerve's voice for Pipes', and he talks to him about his "friend" Swerve who's been feeling bad ever since he accidentally hurt Rung, and he admits he did it because he was afraid that if he said no then Rodimus would take away his bar from him, which Ore then calls him a scumbag for. The two keep talking things out.
The Autobots are teleported to the planet's surface and approach Crystal City, which they find in ruins, Cyclonus flies through the city and reports back that there's signs of a battle, but no bodies. Drift gets angry and wonders what the point of all this is, if their only real lead isn't even around anymore, he gets mad and stabs the ground with his sword, causing a hole to appear, that drags all the group to a lower level.
Magnus was transported to the Benign Intervention (the council ship) instead of the planet, and the ship's captain offers him a place in their team, rather than staying with the Lost Light.

Under the city, Drift is shocked when he finds a Metrotitan, which were the "chariots" of the Knights of Cybertron long ago, after the original five Transformer Gods were all rendered "dead". Inisde his brain chamber, Cyclonus tells the story of the origin, which Rewind records, but Ratchet isn't impressed with the story, which drives him and Drift to an argument, which ends with Ratchet bringing up Drift's Decepticon past and saying all those he killed are still on his hands, which leads to Drift threatening him with a sword.
Rodimus intervenes and has them take some time apart, and tells Chromedome to use his abilities to tap into the Metrotitan's brain. Drift confesses that he believes Rodimus will be the most important person some time down the line, and Rewind shows Cyclonus some images of old Cybertron, which he still misses.
Chromedome taps into the brain, which fills his mind with confusing images of large robots in a battle, this also wakes up the Metrotitan, and sends a blast up to the Council ship in orbit, making them believe they're attacking them. The Council send down troops to the planet, and transport Magnus back to the Lost Light, and then encase it in an incineration shell, which slowing roasts those inside.
Magnus contacts Rodimus about the situation, and Rodimus asks to speak to Swerve, and asks him to make Ore detonate the engines, giving it enough power to Quantum Jump, but Swerve refuses as he wont risk another life again on Rodimus' orders. The Council attack the Autobots under the city. Brainstorm has an idea, to use his miniturzing gun to shrink some of Metrotitan's mass so he can transport easier. Metrotitan transports all the Autobots back to their ship and allows them to Quantum Jmp to safety.
Swerve later goes to see Rung and tells him all that happened, and also reveals that Ore disappeared as well. Rodimus tells Magnus that they've learned that there's some Decepticons in the Argon Nebulae nearby, who may be the one's he took the Circle of Light (whom they all think were kidnapped now), and they're going to try and find them before looking for the Knights.

Elsewhere, Captain of the other ship talks to his superior and reports the incident, and says that the Cybertronians are split and need a regime change. He also reveals that Magnus refused the offer to join them in favor of staying with the Lost Light, with just a smile.

Notes
  • This Annual is set between issue 7 and 8 (whilst the comics are mostly focused on the Decepticons
  • Ultra Magnus' smile is both frightening and devastating
  • According to the "Magnus Vision" he sees everyone as at least a "potential troublemaker"
  • Boy does Tailgate have a very feminine build!
  • Jackpot seems to be one of Tailgate's friends here! (despite him not being seen before now)
  • If Ambulon was the last to get Autobranded, and that was 10 years ago...did Drift (who joined about 5 years ago) not get the ceremony in some way?
  • Rodimus really hates hats....
  • Teleportation is dangerous apparently, which is why the Lost Light crew seem to prefer using shuttles (although why don't they just utilize Orbital Jumps?)
  • For some reason teleportation transforms the Transformers to their alternate modes (even Rewind who is a memory stick)
  • The identities of The Guiding Hand, and the Transformer Gods are shown here, although the Knights are still not shown (but are said to be the first generation of Transformers created after the battle with Mortilus)
  • Drift's regular side-arm swords seem to glow like his main one does too.
  • Drift gets very easily agitated in this story, most likely because of what happened to Crystal City (he shouts at Rewind and attacks Whirl and Ratchet for example)
  • The Legislators from issue 2 reappear in Metrotitan's memories as being involved in a battle (and Ratchet seems to be there too weirdly)
  • Wait...if Ore's head is half stuck in the engine block...then how does he talk? He doesn't seem to be using the radio like Magnus did earlier
  • Swerve gets over what he did to Rung during his talk with Ore, and by finally standing up to Rodimus and telling him that he won't risk another life for him again (this explains why he's shown happily watching movies in issue 8)
  • Swerve is almost an Autobot now, he just needs a badge
  • Trailbreaker has a known alias of Trailcutter
  • Some of the guys who were flushed out of the ship in issue 1 have been off-line since then
  • Whirl left graffiti inside Ultra Magnus...Oh Whirl!
  • Cyclonus has some nice character moments here, he comes to watch Tailgate's ceremony in secret, and seems really touched when Rewind shows him images of "his" Cybertron
